Chapter 1 - THE PERFECT BIRTHDAYThe mansion glittered beneath a summer sky, every window glowing like a jewel against the darkening hills.

Inside, everything was perfect.
The crystal chandeliers had been polished until they reflected the candlelight. White roses covered the dining tables. A massive three-tiered cake stood beneath a curtain of golden balloons, its frosting decorated with tiny sugar butterflies.
It was supposed to be the perfect birthday party for ten-year-old Emily Carter.
And for Claire Carter, Emily’s mother, it was supposed to be a day of happiness.
Claire sat near the window in her wheelchair, watching guests arrive through the glass doors.
Five years earlier, a terrible highway accident had taken away the use of her legs.
It had also changed the way people looked at her.
Some looked at her with pity.
Others with discomfort.
And some, like her husband’s wealthy social circle, looked through her as if she were no longer the woman who had once stood beside Daniel Carter at every charity gala and business dinner.
But Claire had learned to survive without needing anyone’s sympathy.
She had built a quiet strength around herself.
Tonight, however, she kept glancing toward the entrance.
Daniel was late.
Her husband was rarely late.
Then the doors opened.
Daniel finally appeared.
But he wasn't alone.
A tall blonde woman stepped beside him.
Claire's smile disappeared.
Her name was Vanessa Reed.
Daniel had mentioned her dozens of times.
“She's just a colleague.”
Claire had believed him.

Until she saw the way Vanessa looked at him.
And the way Daniel looked back.
