Chapter 15 - CAMP VORA LEARNED TO BREATHESix months after the cafeteria incident, I returned.

Camp Vora felt different.

The buildings hadn't changed.

The mountains hadn't changed.

The mess hall still smelled like coffee, disinfectant, and overcooked eggs.

But soldiers laughed.

That sound nearly stopped me.

Real laughter.

Not nervous laughter around an officer.

Brenda saw me.

“Colonel!”

She came around the counter and hugged me.

“You're too skinny.”

“Nice to see you too.”

Hayes had been promoted.

He now served as senior enlisted advisor under the new base commander.

Miller had stayed in the Army.

He was training for a medical specialty.

“You still have my eagle?”

He reached beneath his shirt.

The insignia hung from a chain.

“Always.”

“Technically inappropriate.”

“Arrest me.”

We both laughed.

Then Miller became serious.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For stepping between us.”

I looked toward the table.

The table had been replaced.

But I could still hear the impact.

Still feel Sterling's hand.

Still remember everyone looking down.

“You stepped up afterward.”

Miller nodded.

Maybe that was how institutions healed.

May you like

Not through one hero.

Through frightened people discovering they weren't alone.
