Chapter 1 - The Marriage That Was Already DyingSophie Bennett had learned that a marriage did not always end with screaming.

Sometimes, it ended quietly.

It ended in the spare bedroom of a Chicago apartment, beneath the cold blue glow of a computer screen, while a husband who had not worked in nine months answered his wife with a single word.

“Later.”

Later had become Mark’s favorite word.

Later meant dinner. Later meant work. Later meant fixing their marriage. Later meant everything Sophie had once believed they would do together.

She paid the mortgage. She paid the utilities. She bought the groceries. Mark sat behind a closed door, chasing mysterious investments and refusing to explain where the money was going.

But there was one subject he never avoided.

Her grandmother’s cabin at Fox Lake.

The property had belonged to Sophie’s grandmother, the woman who had raised her after her parents died. It was old and imperfect, with peeling blue shutters, weathered brick, pine trees surrounding the property, and a porch that smelled of rain and lake water.

To Sophie, it was home.

To Mark, it was an asset.

“You know what that cabin is worth?” he demanded one night.

“It's not for sale.”

“Half a million dollars, Sophie. Maybe more.”

“It belonged to my grandmother.”

“That’s dead money.”

Sophie stared at him across the dinner table.

“No,” she said quietly. “It’s my life.”

Mark’s fork struck the plate.

“You’re not thinking like a team.”

That was the night something inside Sophie finally changed.

She stopped trying to convince him.

Because sometimes the word no is not the beginning of an argument.

Sometimes it is a locked door.

And Mark Bennett had just begun looking for the key.
