Chapter 11 - The Edge of the Black Water

The concussive shockwave of the stun grenade tore the breath from my chest as the world dissolved into blinding white light and a deafening, metallic ring.

The wet steel deck slipped beneath my bare feet, pitching me violently toward the open safety chain that hung over the churning, ink-black harbor.

Salt spray bit into my raw cheeks as my hands scraped across cold, rusted iron, catching the bottom cable just as my torso swung out over the abyss.

Below me, thirty feet of sheer iron hull dropped straight down into the freezing propeller wash where ocean swells smashed against the wooden pilings of Pier 44.

A pair of manicured, bruising hands clamped around my ankle, dragging me backward with frantic, demonic strength.

"You're not surviving this, Margaret!" Daniel shrieked, his voice cracking against the screech of tactical sirens echoing off the shipping containers.

His designer jacket was soaked with harbor brine, his slicked hair plastered wildly over a face that had completely shed every trace of human composure.

The cultured billionaire who had brought me lavender tea in bed was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered predator ready to tear flesh with his bare teeth.

I kicked hard with my free heel, slamming the hard bone of my foot into the bridge of his nose with everything thirty-eight years of standing on classroom floors had given me.

Cartilage crunched beneath the blow, and Daniel let out a wet, guttural howl as hot blood sprayed across his bared teeth.

His grip slipped from my ankle, and I hauled myself back over the edge, rolling across the diamond-plate deck into the shadow of a heavy brass winch.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons and hit the deck!" a megaphone boomed from the pier, the sound cutting through the engine roar like an iron blade.

Blinding searchlights from three black tactical cutters sliced through the swirling fog, pinning the Artemis V in a cage of brilliant white glare.

Muffled cracks of sniper fire echoed from the cranes overhead, taking out the vessel’s auxiliary generators and plunging the main deck into flickering red emergency light.

Daniel staggered to his feet, wiping a smear of crimson from his broken face, his hazel eyes wide and completely unhinged under the crimson glow.

He didn't look at the tactical team swarming up the metal boarding ramps with raised carbines; his eyes were locked entirely on me.

"Fourteen million dollars," he hissed, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the wet steel between us.

"That is what Victoria's life costs, and you were supposed to be nothing more than a biological container for her survival!"

He lunged forward with a serrated dive knife he had pulled from his tactical boot, the blade gleaming like a silver fang in the red light.

I didn't cower; the Flumazenil rushing through my veins had burned away every drop of fear, leaving behind an icy, crystalline focus.

I ducked under his wild swipe, grabbed the loose end of a heavy, grease-soaked mooring hawser, and whipped it directly across his eyes.

The heavy braided rope struck him across the forehead with the force of an iron bar, staggering him backward into the path of the breaching team.

Two tactical operators in full body armor vaulted over the starboard gunwale, slamming Daniel to the deck with crushing force.

His knife clattered uselessly across the metal floor, sliding through a scupper hole and vanishing into the churning ocean below.

"Suspect secured on the main deck!" one of the operators shouted into his tactical headset, driving an armored knee deep between Daniel's shoulder blades.

Zip-ties snapped tight around Daniel's wrists with loud, final zips as he thrashed like a landed shark, cursing my name until his voice turned to a ragged croak.

I leaned against the salt-crusted winch, chest heaving, the icy wind tearing through my thin cotton nightgown as the adrenaline began to tremble in my joints.

A tall man in a navy-blue windbreaker with federal credentials swinging from his neck bounded across the gangway, his silver hair gleaming under the spotlights.

It was Dr. Robert Harrison, accompanied by a woman in a dark tactical vest bearing the gold shield of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Margaret!" Dr. Harrison called out, throwing a heavy thermal blanket over my shivering shoulders and catching my elbow to steady me.

"You're alive, thank God Almighty, you stayed conscious."

"Where is Keller?" I demanded, my voice raw and harsh from Daniel's thumbs on my throat.

"The German surgeon ran down the central hatch toward the lower surgical suite the moment the flashbangs went off," the FBI agent stated grimly.

"Special Agent Vance, tactical lead," she introduced herself with a curt nod, pulling her service weapon and checking the optic.

"My team has the exterior sealed, but the vessel's sub-deck is heavily reinforced with watertight blast doors."

"He's running a full data-wipe on the surgical servers down there," I said, pointing toward the heavy steel companionway hatch.

"I read the manifest in Daniel's safe; Keller has an automated incinerator for biological evidence and emergency scuttle valves to sink this ship if boarded."

Agent Vance’s eyes hardened into flint as she tapped her radio.

"All teams, breach sub-level two immediately; do not let that surgeon touch the bilge controls!"

I pushed off from the winch, pulling the thermal blanket tightly around my shoulders as the ship groaned against the pier pilings.

"I'm coming with you," I said firmly, meeting the agent's surprised stare with an unyielding gaze.

"I spent six months living with the man who built this slaughterhouse, and I am going to watch every inch of it burn."
