Chapter 13 - The Deposition of Margaret Sterling

The subterranean holding facility beneath the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York smelled of damp concrete and industrial disinfectant.

Margaret Sterling sat behind a stainless steel interrogation table, her emerald silk dress now replaced by an oversized orange prison jumpsuit.

Her silver hair, previously styled with flawless aristocratic precision, hung in disheveled strands around her gaunt, sunken face.

Across from her sat two white-shoe defense attorneys who were visibly sweating through their tailored suits as stacks of federal indictments accumulated on the desk.

Margaret pounded her shackled fists against the steel table, her shrill voice echoing off the cinderblock walls as she screamed at her counsel.

She demanded to know why Vanessa had been placed in a separate protective wing and why her daughter was refusing to speak with family attorneys.

The door of the interrogation suite unlocked with a heavy hydraulic hiss, swinging open to reveal Agent Robert Hayes flanked by two federal prosecutors.

Behind them walked Daniel Sterling, his dark suit immaculate and his posture commanding, carrying a thick blue folio under his arm.

Margaret’s eyes flared with venomous triumph as she saw her son, immediately assuming he had come to negotiate a family settlement and secure her release.

She sneered at Daniel, declaring that he had finally come to his senses and realized that a Sterling never airs dirty laundry before common federal agents.

Daniel remained standing, looking down at his mother with an expression of cold, clinical detachment that instantly silenced her arrogance.

Daniel told Margaret that he was not there as her son, but as the chief executive officer of Sterling Enterprises and the legal custodian of Richard-Grace’s proxy.

Margaret scoffed dismissively, stating that the board would reinstate her the moment her corporate attorneys filed an injunction challenging the proxy vote.

Daniel opened the blue folio, placing the certified resignation letters of all twelve board members directly in front of her shackled hands.

Margaret’s mouth dropped open as she recognized the signatures of Harold Ross and every long-time political ally she had bribed for fifteen years.

Daniel informed her that the board had surrendered unconditionally after viewing the surveillance audio of Vanessa admitting Margaret ordered Emma’s fall down the stairs.

Margaret’s face turned an ashen shade of gray, but her predatory instincts immediately kicked in as she tried to shift the blame to her daughter.

She claimed that Vanessa was mentally unstable, hysterical, and had acted entirely on her own impulsive jealousy without Margaret’s knowledge or consent.

Before the words could fully leave Margaret’s lips, the door opened a second time, and Julian Thorne stepped into the interrogation suite.

Margaret stopped breathing, her eyes bulging in pure, unadulterated horror as her gaze locked onto Julian’s face.

The blood drained from her features so rapidly that her defense attorney rushed to support her shoulders, fearing she was suffering a stroke.

Julian pulled a high-back chair up to the table, sat down calmly across from Margaret, and folded his hands over the edge of the steel.

Julian spoke her name with chilling calm, asking Margaret if thirty years of wealth and stolen luxury had been worth the terror she was feeling in this room.

Margaret began to tremble violently, her voice reduced to a cracked, pathetic gasp as she whispered the name Clara Thorne into the dead air.

Julian confirmed that he was Clara’s son, the child Margaret had spent three decades trying to erase through financial intimidation and blackmail.

He reached into his folio and slid the sealed Zurich will and the certified debt cancellation orders across the polished steel surface.

Julian revealed that Richard had left behind a complete audio diary recorded during his final year, documenting every threat Margaret had ever made against Clara and her son.

Furthermore, Richard had documented how Margaret had doctored his medical prescriptions, accelerating his cardiovascular decline to seize control of the trust.

Margaret’s defense attorneys looked at the medical records and the Swiss codicil, exchanged horrified glances, and immediately stepped away from their client.

The lead attorney informed the federal prosecutors that they were withdrawing from Margaret’s defense due to irreconcilable conflicts of interest and fraudulent disclosure.

Margaret lunged across the table, her steel chains rattling violently as she tried to grab the documents, screaming that everything belonged to her.

She shrieked that she was the matriarch of Sterling Enterprises, that Richard had been nothing without her family’s money, and that Daniel was a traitor to his own blood.

Daniel leaned down until his eyes were level with his mother’s manic, bloodshot stare.

Daniel informed her that Vanessa had just signed a comprehensive plea agreement forty minutes ago, admitting under oath that Margaret promised her twenty million dollars to ensure Emma miscarried.

Vanessa had surrendered every encrypted text, every voicemail, and every offshore account routing number in exchange for avoiding a life sentence.

Margaret froze, the realization that her own daughter had traded her freedom for survival shattering the last remnants of her imperious composure.

The woman who had terrorized high society, commanded corporate boards, and ordered the murder of her own unborn grandchild collapsed forward onto the table.

She began to weep hysterically, great ugly sobs of defeat tearing through her chest as she begged Daniel to have mercy on his own mother.

Daniel stood upright, stepped back from the table, and buttoned his jacket with steady, deliberate movements.

He looked down at the broken woman on the concrete floor, stating clearly that she had shown no mercy when she pushed his pregnant wife down thirty oak stairs.

Daniel turned his back on Margaret Sterling for the final time, walking out of the federal interrogation suite alongside his brother Julian and Agent Hayes.

Behind them, the heavy steel door slammed shut, locking Margaret Sterling into the cold, permanent reality of the justice she had spent thirty years trying to escape.
