Chapter 7 - The Trial of Blood

The federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan was under siege by international media. The preliminary evidentiary hearing of *The United States v. Ethan Vale* had turned into the trial of the century.

Claire sat in the front row of the prosecution's gallery, flanked by Marcus Reed. Across the aisle, sitting in the section reserved for the victim's family, was Vanessa. The public was stunned by their physical proximity; the tabloids had spent the week predicting a vicious, protracted civil war between the legitimate heir and the disinherited socialite.

At the defense table, Ethan looked like a condemned man who had finally realized the gallows were real. His legal team had already abandoned the theory of fabricated evidence; the Department of Justice had uncovered a concrete bunker beneath the boathouse at Blackwood Lake containing personal artifacts belonging to Helen Morgan, including her vehicle's registration and her dental records.

The prosecutor, an unrelenting assistant U.S. attorney named Sarah Lin, stood before the bench.

"Your Honor, the government presents Exhibit 42: the recovered phone audio from the night of the Grand Meridian Gala. We also present the sworn deposition of former Blackwood County Deputy Sheriff Thomas Vance, who has confessed under a plea agreement that he received monthly stipends from Ethan Vale’s private holding company to keep the Helen Morgan file buried."

Ethan's lead attorney leaned into his ear, whispering frantically, but Ethan violently shoved the man's arm away. He stood up abruptly, knocking his heavy leather chair backward against the partition.

"This is a farce!" Ethan screamed, his composure finally disintegrating into absolute madness. "Arthur Whitmore ordered the execution! My father only cleaned up his mess! You think the Whitmore Foundation was built on philanthropy? It was built on dead union leaders, poisoned ground water, and silenced journalists! I kept this family alive for twenty years! Without me, Vanessa would be bankrupt in a rehab clinic, and that little bastard would have died in a gutter!"

"Mr. Vale! Sit down or you will be bound and gagged!" the federal judge roared, slamming his gavel down with resounding fury.

Ethan turned his venomous gaze straight toward Claire and Vanessa. "You look at each other like you're sisters? You're monsters! The Whitmore blood is poison! You'll tear each other apart before the year is out! You hear me, Clarissa? You're Arthur’s daughter! The rot is inside you too!"

Four federal marshals wrestled Ethan to the ground, pinning him against the carpeted floor before hauling him through the side holding door, his muffled screams fading down the concrete corridor.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Claire turned her head toward the gallery aisle. Vanessa was looking back at her. The heiress’s face was pale, but her jaw was set.

Ethan's words hung in the air like a curse: *The Whitmore blood is poison.*

As Claire walked out of the courthouse steps into the blinding flash of three hundred camera strobes, the microphones were thrust directly into her face.

"Ms. Whitmore! Will you liquidate the company?"

"Clarissa, are you evicting Vanessa from the family estate?"

"What will you do with the two billion dollar inheritance?"

Claire stopped at the bottom of the granite steps. She looked out at the sea of predatory faces, the lenses, the flashing lights that wanted nothing more than to see another dynasty self-destruct for entertainment.

Marcus stepped forward to shield her, but Claire gently placed a hand on his arm, holding him back.

She leaned into the cluster of microphones.

"My name is not Clarissa Whitmore," she said, her voice clear, calm, and broadcast live to seventy million households. "My name is Claire Morgan. The Whitmore name died in that lake twenty years ago. And the money they stole by poisoning people's water and silencing people's mothers... it will not buy another yacht, another gala, or another politician. Tomorrow morning, the entire corporate trust will be placed under the administration of the victims of Blackwood."

The reporters gasped, the shutters firing like automatic weapons.

Claire turned and walked past the barricades toward the waiting town car. Vanessa was standing by the curb, watching her with a look of profound, stunned reverence.

"Claire," Vanessa said, catching up to her before she reached the car door. "You... you're giving away fifty-one percent of the control?"

May you like

"I don't want his kingdom, Vanessa," Claire said, looking her sister dead in the eyes. "I just wanted my mother back. And since I can't have that, I'm going to make sure no one ever dies for Arthur Whitmore's vanity again."
