Chapter 8 - The Independent Proof

*(CHAPTER 8 — INDEPENDENT PROOF)*

Margaret Sloan didn't waste a second. She reached into her briefcase once more and pulled out a certified legal envelope bearing the seal of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington.

“Even if Elena hadn't recorded that despicable afternoon,” Margaret said, her voice dropping into the icy register of an attorney delivering a closing argument, “Arthur made sure you couldn't survive this day, Diane.”

She withdrew a series of high-resolution forensic documents.

“Two months before his death, Arthur had me retain Dr. Leonard Vance—no relation—the head of forensic document analysis at the state police crime laboratory. We took three dozen verified exemplars of Arthur’s signature from the past thirty years. When you filed your fraudulent will with the county clerk, we had the original document sub-poenaed and analyzed under multi-spectral infrared luminescence.”

Margaret placed the enlarged photographs on the table.

“The ink on that signature wasn't from Arthur’s vintage Parker pen,” Margaret explained, pointing to the glowing forensic scans. “It was from a Pilot G2 rollerball—the exact make and model found in Diane’s office desk. Furthermore, the pressure analysis demonstrated dual-hand tremor, consistent with one person forcibly guiding the paralyzed hand of another. The state crime lab verified the forgery eighteen months ago.”

“If you knew eighteen months ago,” Diane whispered, her voice hollow and dry, “why didn't you arrest me then?”

“Because Arthur’s instructions were precise,” Margaret replied coldly. “He knew that if we exposed you immediately, Julian’s lenders would immediately file a lien against the estate to recover the stolen collateral, entangling this land in federal bankruptcy proceedings for a decade. We had to wait until Julian’s bankruptcy was finalized and Arthur’s irrevocable trust reached its twenty-first-year maturation trigger.”

Margaret looked at her watch.

“And we had to wait until you signed the Meridian purchase contract. Because by signing that contract this morning, Diane, you didn't just commit state estate fraud. You committed wire fraud across state lines. You executed a commercial transfer on property you knew you didn't own, utilizing interstate banking networks to solicit a four-million-dollar deposit.”

The second deputy at the door stepped forward, unclipping a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt.

“Special Agent Marcus from the FBI’s financial crimes division is waiting at the county courthouse,” Margaret added softly. “Your game didn't just fail, Diane. It escalated into a twenty-year mandatory federal sentence.”
