Chapter 2 - The Plunge of Salvation

Twenty-four-year-old Maya had only stepped onto the penthouse roof to deliver an urgent dossier to the party host.

An athletic former lifeguard working long hours as a junior paralegal, she felt distinctly out of place amid the lavish excess.

Her simple white blouse and tailored black slacks contrasted sharply with the sea of silk dresses and designer tuxedos.

She had barely walked ten feet past the glass conservatory doors when a violent disturbance at the main pool caught her eye.

A massive geyser of water was settling over the perimeter, splashing wet patterns against the dry patio furniture.

Maya halted instantly, her trained instincts flaring before her conscious mind could fully process the scene.

She saw the ripples undulating outward in violent, concentric rings.

She saw a tall blonde woman in a red gown standing motionless at the edge, staring rigidly into the depths.

Maya stepped closer, her sharp eyes cutting through the artificial glare of the underwater halogen lamps.

Beneath the shimmering turquoise surface, a dark silhouette was trapped at the bottom of the deep end.

A heavy wheelchair was resting sideways against the pool floor, pinned down by its own steel frame.

Inside it, a heavily pregnant woman in a soaked blue gown was thrashing in desperate, fading convulsions.

“Oh, my God!” Maya gasped aloud, the dossier slipping from her hands and scattering white pages across the wet tiles.

There was no time to yell for security.

There was no time to ask the silent blonde woman what had happened.

Every second that passed was another brain cell starved of oxygen, another heartbeat stolen from an unborn child.

Maya took three sprinting strides across the slippery stone, kicking off her flat shoes in mid-stride.

“I’M COMING! HOLD ON!” she screamed into the evening air.

Without shedding her heavy clothes, Maya launched herself headfirst over the edge in a clean, powerful racing dive.

The impact broke the surface tension with a resounding crack, sending a second wave across the luxury deck.

Victoria spun around in absolute horror, her composure fracturing into shards of naked terror.

She had calculated every variable—the noise, the privacy of the pool wing, the locked gate—except for a random witness.

Beneath the water, Maya forced her eyes open against the burning sting of the chlorine.

The pool was eight feet deep, illuminated by harsh blue LEDs that turned the underwater scene into a ghostly nightmare.

She kicked her legs with ferocious, rhythmic power, slicing through the heavy resistance of her soaked trousers.

Clara was running out of time; her movements had slowed to faint, drifting spasms, her eyes rolling back toward the pool lights.

Maya reached the bottom within seconds and gripped the cold steel push-handle of the sunken wheelchair.

She locked her knees against the pool bottom and reached directly for the lap-belt buckle resting against Clara’s hips.

Her wet fingers slipped off the slick plastic housing on the first attempt.

The water pressure and Clara’s limp, heavy posture had jammed the release latch against the seat cushion.

Clara’s gaze drifted toward Maya through the turquoise haze, her eyes wide with a horrifying mixture of plea and surrender.

Those drowning eyes screamed the universal prayer of a dying mother: Save my child.

Maya shook her head underwater, sending a shower of loose bubbles from her ponytail, refusing to let the woman drown.

She braced her left forearm against the metal frame to create leverage, her knuckles turning bone-white under the strain.

She dug the edge of her thumb under the stubborn release latch and pressed down with every ounce of strength she possessed.

Click.

The mechanical latch snapped open, and the heavy canvas strap whipped free into the current.

Maya did not hesitate for a single microsecond; she hooked her right arm firmly under Clara’s armpits, locking her across the chest.

With her free hand, she gave the sunken wheelchair a violent backward shove, sending the steel trap rolling away into the shadows.

Maya dug the balls of her feet into the tiled floor and pushed upward with an explosive, quad-burning thrust.

Clara’s saturated dress pulled at them like a lead parachute, threatening to drag both women back into the dark.

Maya kicked harder, her own lungs beginning to burn with fiery desperation as the glittering ceiling of the water drew near.

She refused to yield to the suffocating weight.

They broke through the surface of the pool in an explosion of spray, gasping frantically for the cool night air.

Clara choked violently, coughing up mouthfuls of water as her body convulsed in Maya’s firm embrace.

“BREATHE! I’VE GOT YOU! BREATHE!” Maya yelled, keeping Clara’s chin elevated high above the waterline.

The night air hit Clara’s raw lungs like needles, but it was the breath of life returning to her body.

Her trembling, blue-tinted hands moved instinctively to her rounded belly, clutching the wet fabric in primal terror.

“My baby… please, God, my baby…” Clara sobbed between ragged, painful gasps.

“I have you, you’re safe, hold onto my shoulders,” Maya commanded with steady, soothing authority.

With measured, powerful backstrokes, Maya hauled the exhausted mother toward the submerged concrete steps at the shallow end.

Clara clung to the young paralegal as if Maya were the only solid anchor existing in a crumbling universe.

They reached the first submerged step, Clara’s shivering knees scraping against the non-slip tread.

For one fleeting second, it seemed the impossible nightmare had been conquered by sheer human will.

Then the heavy, rhythmic clicking of high heels echoed aggressively against the wet stone coping above.
