Chapter 7 - The Smear Campaign Begins

Even with her wrists secured tightly in carbon steel behind her back, Elaine’s venomous defiance refused to be extinguished.
As the officers turned her around to walk her down the porch stairs, she caught sight of her smartphone lying on the hood of our car.
She screamed at Dean, ordering him to grab the phone and broadcast this illegal police brutality to the entire extended family immediately.
Dean didn't move an inch; he sat curled in a pathetic ball against the truck tire, utterly broken by the humiliation of the evening.
Elaine thrash-stepped down the stairs, her designer cardigan torn at the shoulder seam from her violent resistance against the officers.
She locked her bloodshot eyes onto me, shouting that her sisters, my aunts Evelyn and Brenda, were already being notified of my treason.
She claimed that before sunrise tomorrow, every single person in our hometown would know that I put my own mother in chains for trying to help.
She screamed that she would ensure my grandmother’s trust fund disinherited me down to the absolute very last cent.
Officer Martinez guided Elaine firmly toward the rear passenger door of the first patrol cruiser, ignoring her stream of profanities.
Officer Brooks walked over to our car, his flashlight pointing downward to avoid blinding the newborn baby sleeping in the back.
He spoke with a low, respectful tone, asking Ryan and me if we intended to press formal criminal charges against Elaine Parker.
He outlined the charges that were currently supported by physical evidence: criminal trespass, attempted breaking and entering, and criminal damaging to our door.
He added that her resistance on the porch and assaultive behavior toward law enforcement carried separate statutory felony charges.
I felt Ryan’s arm wrap securely around my trembling shoulders, supporting almost half of my body weight as my legs threatened to give out.
My surgical incision was throbbing with an intense, pulsing heat that warned me I was dangerously close to tearing my internal sutures.
I looked at the scuff marks on our front door, the shattered key mechanism, and the massive moving truck occupying our sanctuary.
I remembered the years of subtle, psychological terror she had inflicted upon my childhood, making me feel responsible for her happiness.
I remembered how she had deliberately waited until I was sliced open on an operating table to stage this hostile corporate takeover of my life.
If I showed mercy now, if I declined to press charges out of some lingering, misplaced obligation to biological blood, she would return tomorrow.
She would take my mercy as proof of my weakness, returning with more demands, more relatives, and more toxic entitlement.
I looked Officer Brooks dead in his eyes and stated with complete, unwavering clarity that we wanted every single applicable charge filed.
I added that we required a temporary emergency protection order barring both Elaine Parker and Dean from coming within five hundred feet of our family.
Inside the rear of the patrol cruiser, through the heavy Plexiglas window, Elaine must have read my lips because she began banging her head against the partition.
Her muffled screams sounded like the frantic baying of a caged predator that had finally realized the bars were made of reinforced iron.
Officer Brooks nodded approvingly, pulling a digital handheld tablet from his tactical vest to record our formal victim statements.
While Officer Brooks took down our information, Dean slowly stood up from the pavement, his hands raised in a gesture of complete, pathetic surrender.
He walked toward Officer Martinez, begging her not to arrest him as well, swearing that he would cooperate fully with everything they required.
He offered to personally unload the master bedroom box from our porch, reload it into the truck, and drive the vehicle away immediately.
Officer Martinez checked her dispatch tablet and informed Dean that the rental company had already requested an immediate commercial impound.
May you like
A heavy-duty city tow truck was already en route to Primrose Lane to seize the twenty-six-foot vehicle and its entire contents.
Dean’s face fell into an expression of utter, catastrophic ruin as he realized that everything they owned in the world was about to be locked in an impound lot.
