Chapter 10 - The Shadows of Door County

Morgan stepped out into the frigid coastal rain, the wet gravel shifting silently beneath her rubber boots.

The wind blew hard off Lake Michigan, whipping strands of damp hair across her face as she approached the back of the black pickup.

She glanced into the truck’s bed; inside lay professional surveying equipment, steel measuring stakes, and a heavy iron crowbar.

Julian hadn't just promised the land; Victor Vance had already sent his men to begin parceling the orchard for subdivision.

Morgan gripped the heavy steel flashlight like a baton, keeping her weight balanced and her footsteps light as she moved toward the porch steps.

The wooden steps creaked faintly beneath her boots, the sound masked by the steady drumming of rain on the tin roof above.

The front screen door was indeed mangled, its hook latch sheared clean from the wooden jamb.

Morgan pressed her back against the exterior wall beside the open timber door, peering cautiously through the narrow glass pane.

The interior of the cottage smelled of old cedar, dried lavender, and the sharp, invasive odor of cheap cigarette smoke.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a canvas work jacket was standing in the center of the living room, holding a clipboard in one hand and a tape measure in the other.

On the dining table where Clara had served warm cherry pies, the man had laid out a set of architectural blueprints and a contractor’s sledgehammer.

He was talking loudly on a satellite phone held between his ear and shoulder.

“Yeah, Victor, the place is completely empty,” the man said, his gravelly voice carrying clearly through the damp room.

“Julian’s wife should be in the morgue in Cook County by tomorrow morning if Mercer followed the schedule.”

Morgan felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end as the full scope of the conspiracy washed over her.

These men weren't just lenders who had been deceived by Julian; they were active, knowing conspirators in the timing of her execution.

“Once the obituary prints, we file the quitclaim deed with the county clerk in Sturgeon Bay,” the man continued, laughing into the receiver.

“The local zoning board won't even blink; we’ll have the bulldozers in the orchard before her estate even enters probate.”

Morgan’s grip on the flashlight tightened until her knuckles turned snow-white.

Every instinct warned her to back away, retreat to the car, and drive ten miles down the road to find a landline at a gas station.

But as she looked past the intruder, she saw Clara’s framed portrait on the mantelpiece, tilted sideways and covered in drywall dust where the man had shoved it aside.

A fierce, protective fury erupted within Morgan’s chest, burning away the last lingering remnants of the frightened accountant who had boarded a CTA bus a week ago.

She took a deep breath, stepped squarely into the open doorway, and flicked the high-intensity LED flashlight straight into the intruder’s eyes.

The blinding, two-thousand-lumen beam hit the man directly across the face, cutting off his laughter in a startled, defensive grunt.

“Drop the phone and take your hands off my table,” Morgan commanded, her voice ringing out through the rafters like a pistol crack.

The man dropped his clipboard in shock, throwing an arm up to shield his eyes from the blinding glare as his satellite phone clattered onto the floorboards.

“Who the hell are you?” the man shouted, squinting through the searing light, his free hand instinctively reaching toward the heavy utility knife strapped to his work belt.

“I’m Morgan Mercer,” she said, stepping forward into the room without lowering the beam by a single millimeter.

“The woman you were expecting to find in the Cook County morgue.”

Through the open doorway behind her, the dark silhouette of Evelyn Vance appeared at the threshold, holding the long steel crowbar she had taken from the back of the pickup truck.

Outside, the storm intensified, the howling coastal wind slamming the orchard branches against the cottage walls as the standoff froze in time.
