Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Predator

I unlocked the bedroom door with shaking hands, pulling Sophie behind my back as the heavy oak panel swung open.

The living room was an absolute war zone of shattered glass, overturned mahogany chairs, and crimson stains soaking into the white rug.

One of the intruders lay motionless on the floor near the balcony, bound hand and foot with heavy industrial zip-ties, his nose broken and bleeding profusely.

The second man had escaped through the garden path, leaving behind a tactical backpack and an encrypted satellite phone that was blinking with an incoming call.

Marcus stood in the center of the wreckage, his knuckles bleeding and his blazer torn at the shoulder, but his eyes were sharp and predatory.

He picked up the blinking satellite phone with a gloved hand and pressed the speaker button.

"The transport was supposed to be clean," a woman’s chilling, cultured voice drifted through the small speaker, perfectly clear and devoid of fear.

Patricia.

"Your hired thugs are currently unconscious on the floor of my suite, Patricia," I said, stepping forward until my voice hit the microphone with cold, venomous clarity.

There was a brief pause on the other end, followed by the soft, elegant clink of an ice cube against crystal glass.

"Emily, dear," Patricia purred, her tone entirely conversational, as if she were greeting me at a country club luncheon.

"I must commend your resilience."

"Most women of your common background would have collapsed in tears hours ago."

"Where are you, you cowardly monster?" I demanded, my hands clenching into fists at my sides.

"I am in the only place that matters, sweetheart," Patricia replied with a sinister, mocking laugh.

"I am at the Vance Family Sovereign Office in downtown Philadelphia."

"And while your little resort security guard was busy playing soldier, my legal team was finalizing the restructuring of the Aegis Horizon network."

"You think that foolish federal freeze will hold my assets?"

"My family built the financial institutions of this state before your ancestors even set foot on this continent."

"By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, every judge who owes their seat to the Vance foundation will sign the necessary emergency authorizations."

"You will be stripped of your parental rights by court order, and Daniel will be released from his cell to sign the permanent conservatorship papers."

"Daniel knows what you did," I said, spitting the words into the receiver.

"He watched the video, Patricia."

"He knows you tried to murder his daughter, and he knows you were ready to frame him for grand larceny."

Patricia let out a low, rattling laugh that sent shivers down my spine.

"Daniel is a creature of habit, Emily."

"He will spend one night in a concrete cage, terrified of the inmates around him, and by morning he will crawl back to his mother on his hands and knees."

"He will sign whatever I place in front of him, just as he has done his entire pathetic life."

"And when he does, you and your little bastard child will be left on the street without a single penny to your name."

"Listen to me very carefully, Patricia," I said, leaning so close to the phone my breath clouded the cracked glass screen.

"You threw my daughter into a pond because you thought I was a weak girl who would roll over and die."

"You thought Daniel's slap would break me."

"Instead, you just freed me from the only thing that was holding me back."

"I am coming to Philadelphia tomorrow morning."

"And I am not bringing divorce lawyers."

"I am bringing the federal marshals, the Department of Justice, and the full unedited surveillance hard drives from this resort."

"I am going to strip the Vance name from every building in this state until you are remembered as nothing more than a convicted child abuser."

On the other end of the line, Patricia’s mocking laughter abruptly died.

A cold, suffocating silence stretched across the satellite connection for five agonizing seconds.

"You won't make it to Philadelphia, Emily," Patricia whispered, her voice dropping into a deadly, guttural promise.

"Because Carter Sterling isn't the only partner handling this estate."

"There is another person who owns fifty percent of Aegis Horizon—someone who has been inside your home, watching you and Sophie for the last five years."

"Ask yourself, Emily: who do you think installed the nursery camera in Sophie’s bedroom?"

The call abruptly disconnected with a sharp, electronic tone.

My blood ran cold as her final words echoed inside my mind, freezing my heart into a block of solid ice.

The nursery camera.

Daniel hadn't installed it; he didn't even know how to set up the wireless router.

It had been installed three years ago by Daniel's closest childhood friend and the chief financial officer of Vance Enterprises—Julian Sterling, Carter Sterling's son.

The man who had been our trusted dinner guest every single Sunday.

The man who had keys to our home, access to our personal bank accounts, and Sophie’s complete, innocent trust.

I slowly turned to look at Marcus, whose hardened face had drained of every drop of color.

"Marcus," I whispered, the room spinning around me as the true scope of the nightmare revealed itself.

"They aren't trying to take Sophie tomorrow in court."

"They already have the keys to our house."
