Chapter 9 - What Their Mother Left BehindSpring returned slowly.

One Sunday morning, Ethan found a box in the attic labeled HANNAH.

Daniel had avoided opening it for years.

Inside were letters.

Birthday cards.

Photographs.

And two envelopes marked for Ethan and Lily.

Hannah had written them while pregnant with Lily.

She had intended the children to read them when they were older.

Daniel almost put them back.

Ethan stopped him.

“I want mine.”

They sat together beneath the attic window.

Ethan opened his.

Daniel did not read over his shoulder.

After several minutes Ethan began crying.

Daniel held him.

“What did she say?”

Ethan handed him the letter.

One line had been underlined.

Being brave does not mean you never get scared. It means fear does not get to decide who you become.

Daniel's vision blurred.

Lily opened hers.

Hannah had written:

If the world ever feels too big, find your brother. If he is scared too, hold hands. You will still be two frightened people, but you will not be alone.

Lily looked at Ethan.

During the attack, that was exactly what they had done.

They held each other.

Daniel turned away and wiped his eyes.

For years he had believed he needed to replace what his children lost.

A second mother.

A complete household.

A new version of the family that existed before Hannah died.

But Hannah's letters showed him the truth.

Families were not repaired by replacing people.

They healed by learning how to carry absence together.
