Chapter 11 - BLOODLINES AND BULLET POINTS

The grandfather clock in Evelyn’s formal living room ticked like a slow-burning fuse.
The house smelled of polished mahogany, stale lavender perfume, and suffocating generational wealth.
Ryan stood in the center of the Persian rug, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets.
I sat on the edge of the stiff velvet settee, keeping my spine straight and unyielding.
Evelyn entered carrying a silver tea service, moving with the measured calm of an untouchable queen.
"I didn't expect you both on a Tuesday morning," she said smoothly, pouring pale tea into porcelain cups.
"You sponsored Brianna's release," Ryan stated, ignoring the teacup she extended toward him.
Evelyn paused, the silver pot hovering half an inch above the saucer.
She didn't flinch, nor did she lower her chin in shame.
She simply set the pot down with a soft, aristocratic clink.
"She is my daughter, Ryan," Evelyn said, her tone as dry as autumn leaves. "And your sister."
"She tried to kill my children before they took their first breath!" Ryan roared, the sound shaking the china cabinet.
"She made a terrible mistake in a moment of emotional distress," Evelyn replied without blinking.
"A mistake?" I interjected, my voice cutting through the room like broken glass.
Evelyn finally turned her cool, assessing gaze toward me, her lips thinning into a razor-thin line.
"You never understood how our family handles crises, Nora," she said coldly.
"You handle them with checkbooks and perjury," I shot back, gripping my purse until my fingers ached.
"The girl has served eighteen months in a dreadful facility," Evelyn continued, entirely unbothered. "Her spirit is broken."
"Her spirit?" Ryan scoffed, running a frantic hand through his hair. "She punched Nora in the stomach for money!"
"The money you hoarded from your grandfather's trust," Evelyn countered, her eyes flashing with sudden venom.
"That money was left to my children by grandfather himself," Ryan growled. "Not to Brianna to fund her failing boutique."
"Brianna is pregnant, Ryan," Evelyn said softly.
The room seemed to lose all air in an instant.
I stared at the older woman, my chest seizing as the words sank into my consciousness.
"What did you just say?" Ryan asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
"She conceived while out on medical furlough four months ago," Evelyn said, adjusting her pearl necklace. "She has medical complications."
"That doesn't erase what she did to Nora," Ryan spat, stepping closer to his mother's chair.
"The judge agrees that home confinement at my estate is suitable given her condition," Evelyn said evenly.
"Your estate is three miles from our front door," I whispered, terror prickling at the back of my neck.
"Then I suggest you keep your gates locked," Evelyn murmured, sipping her tea.
She looked at me over the rim of the cup, her eyes entirely devoid of human warmth.
"And Nora," Evelyn added, setting her cup down with deliberate precision.
"What?" I choked out, barely able to contain the revulsion coursing through my veins.

"The petition is already filed," Evelyn said with a cold, triumphant smile. "The hearing is tomorrow morning."
