Chapter 2 - The Web of Deceit

By the time the police arrived, the investigation had turned into a minefield of accusations. Mark was immediately cornered when a half-empty vial of the exact same sedative was discovered tucked beneath his driver’s seat. The world felt like it was tilting on its axis. My husband, the man I had trusted with my life and our daughter’s future, was being painted as the villain.

Rachel was quick to fuel the fire. She told the police that Mark had been by her side while she prepared the lemonade, implying he had slipped the substance in while she wasn't looking. Mark, oddly, stayed silent. He looked like a man resigned to a fate he couldn't fight.

As the authorities dug into our lives, the picture grew darker. They found records of massive gambling debts in Mark’s name. They discovered he had been borrowing money from Rachel in secret for months. Most devastating of all, $300,000 had been siphoned from our joint savings account. I felt like I was waking up in a stranger’s home.

Then came the anonymous tip. My phone buzzed with an unknown number, and a gravelly voice whispered, "Mark has been selling the sedative." The ground beneath me shattered. If Mark was trafficking drugs, was Emma just a pawn? Or was she an accidental victim of a much larger, more dangerous criminal enterprise?
