Chapter 20 - The Trap in the Penthouse

"Your Honor," Dante spoke, stepping forward alone, holding the encrypted hard drive high between his fingers. "I hold forensic evidence of the murder of Vincent Moretti, the embezzlement of forty billion dollars in federal defense subsidies, and an orchestrated corporate kidnapping conspiracy signed by Harrison Vance and Eleanor Moretti."

Harrison Vance’s face turned gray as ash. "Your Honor! This man is an unstable fugitive who renounced his legal status—"

"Shut your mouth, Vance," Judge Carter barked. She looked at Dante, then at me, holding our sleeping twins in the stroller. "In my chambers. All of you. Now."

For two hours, behind closed doors, Dante laid out the evidence. Julianna’s decrypted audio. The digital chain of custody showing Eleanor’s altered will filings. The forensic medical examiner’s hidden toxicological report from fifteen years ago proving Vincent Moretti had lethal traces of digitalis in his blood when he supposedly died of a heart attack.

When the presentation ended, Judge Carter sat in silence for a full minute, her pen tapping against her blotter.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Carter said, her voice dripping with ice. "You are under immediate court-ordered house arrest pending an emergency grand jury indictment. The custody injunction against Dante and Lena Moretti is hereby vacated with prejudice."

She looked at Dante. "The US Marshals have been dispatched to the Moretti Tower penthouse to execute an arrest warrant on Eleanor Moretti."

We had won.

The nightmare was over. The court order was shredded. Eleanor was going to spend the rest of her miserable life behind bars. As we stepped out of the courthouse under Keller's tight security, the heavy weight that had crushed my chest for months finally lifted. I looked at Dante, and for the first time, a genuine, tearful smile broke across his face.

"It’s finished, Lena," he whispered, wrapping an arm around me, kissing my temple. "We’re going home."

We drove back to the private airstrip in Waukegan to fly straight back to our quiet lake. The suburban cabin was waiting for us. The nightmare of the Moretti dynasty was burning to ash behind us.

At 4:15 PM, as our Suburban pulled up to the private hangar, Dante’s encrypted phone buzzed.

He pulled it from his pocket, expecting a status report from the Marshals confirming his mother's arrest. But as he looked at the screen, every drop of color drained from his face. His hand began to shake—a violent, uncontrollable tremor.

"Dante?" I asked, cold dread instantly seizing my throat. "What is it?"

Without a word, he turned the screen toward me.

It was a live video feed from our remote cabin by Lake Michigan. The front door had been completely blown off its hinges. The cedar planks Dante had nailed shut were splintered across the snow.

Inside the nursery, the empty wooden crib was covered in fresh, dark red spray paint forming two words:

*WRONG TWINS.*

Suddenly, my phone in my purse began to chime with an incoming FaceTime call from an unknown, restricted international number.

Dante grabbed my wrist, his eyes wide with an absolute, suffocating horror. "Lena... don't answer it."

My thumb hit the green button before I could stop myself.

The screen flickered to life.

It wasn't Eleanor. It wasn't Harrison Vance.

Sitting in a sterile, white hospital room, holding a crying newborn baby boy with Dante's exact dark eyes and sharp brow, was Julianna Vance—alive, breathing, and smiling directly into the camera.

May you like

*"Hello, Lena,"* Julianna whispered through the phone, her voice smooth like silk and poison. *"You didn't really think Dante only had two children, did you?"*

The call instantly went black.
