Chapter 1 - The Invisible Wall

The fluorescent lights of the visitation room hummed with a sterile, unforgiving buzz. Arthur sat frozen, the neon orange of his jumpsuit feeling heavier than the steel chains that had brought him here. Inches away, yet a lifetime apart, was the thick, smudged bulletproof glass. On the other side sat his wife, Sarah, her eyes red-rimmed, clutching their baby girl. Arthur pressed his scarred palm against the cold pane. He could see their lips moving, could see the tears streaming down Sarah’s cheeks, but the silence was deafening. He was a ghost in his own life, trapped in a concrete purgatory.
