The brutality of the revelation stripped away any lingering restraint in Daniel’s soul.

These monsters had not merely invaded his home; they had orchestrated a multi-year campaign to systematically hunt his family, eliminate Emily, and enslave his only child for paper money.

"You will never touch him," Daniel growled, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register.

Julian charged with terrifying speed, the knife slicing through the darkness in a vicious upward arc. Daniel sidestepped, the blade cutting a clean line through his cotton shirt, grazing his ribs with white-hot pain.

Ignoring the agony, Daniel threw his entire body weight forward, tackling Julian at the waist.

Both men crashed through the balustrade at the top of the staircase. Wood splintered with the sound of gunshots as the banister gave way entirely. Together, locked in a brutal tangle of limbs and fury, they plummeted from the second-floor landing down to the hardwood floor of the ground foyer.

The impact drove every ounce of oxygen from Daniel's lungs. The world went blindingly white, then black, before his consciousness dragged itself back.

He was lying on his back amid shattered banister spindles. Beside him, Julian was already coughing, shaking his head, wiping a gash above his eyebrow where he had clipped the bottom step. Julian was faster to recover. His hand reached out, grabbing Daniel by the throat.

His grip was like an hydraulic press. Daniel gasped, his hands clawing at Julian's thick fingers as his vision began to tunnel.

"Weak," Julian hissed, pinning Daniel's neck to the floor. "Just like your dead wife. She begged, too."

Suddenly, a loud, sharp sound rang out from the kitchen doorway.

*CLANG.*

Julian’s head jerked toward the noise.

Standing in the shadows of the doorway, illuminated by the faint glow of the kitchen emergency nightlight, stood Mason. The little boy was shaking, his tiny hands clutching Emily’s heavy cast-iron skillet, his eyes blazing with an unearthly fury.
