Chapter 1 - The House That RememberedThe Hawthorne estate had always been a house of appearances.

From the outside, it looked untouchable—an enormous stone mansion rising above the Connecticut countryside, surrounded by iron gates, ancient oaks, and perfectly trimmed gardens. Every window reflected wealth. Every corridor whispered old money.
But on this storm-heavy night, the mansion felt less like a home and more like a tomb.
Rain battered the tall windows. Thunder rolled across the hills. Crystal chandeliers trembled faintly above the grand hallway as fourteen-year-old Leo Hawthorne stood between his little sister and Eleanor, their stepmother.
Eleanor wore a crimson evening dress.
Normally, she would have looked elegant.
Tonight, she looked dangerous.
Her carefully painted face was distorted by rage.
“Dead girls don't reveal family secrets,” she hissed.
Mia, only eight years old, whimpered behind Leo.
Leo stepped forward.
“You're not touching her.”
Eleanor slapped him.
The sound exploded through the hallway.
Leo stumbled against the floral wallpaper, pain flashing across his jaw. But he stayed upright.
He wrapped one arm around Mia.
His heart was pounding.
He was terrified.
But he had discovered something three nights earlier.
Something that could destroy Eleanor.
Something that could explain why his mother, Sarah, had disappeared six months ago.
And Eleanor knew he knew.
“You think your father will believe you?” Eleanor whispered.
Leo stared into her eyes.
“He will.”
Eleanor smiled.
“No, sweetheart.”
May you like
She grabbed his collar.
“By the time he comes home, there may be nothing left to believe.”
