Chapter 6 - The Man Who Came to Help

The first person through the front door was not Daniel Ross. It was Officer James Bell from the patrol unit stationed outside. He entered quickly, one hand near his holster. “Black sedan just stopped across the intersection, then pulled away when we approached. Plate was covered.” Grant ordered the perimeter expanded. Ethan wanted Lily taken somewhere else immediately, but Sarah refused to let anyone move her daughter until they knew exactly who was outside. “That’s what Daniel wants,” she said. “Movement. Confusion. Separation.” Grant agreed. The safest place, for the moment, was the center of a house surrounded by police.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then Daniel called Ethan directly.

Ethan stared at the name on his phone.

DANIEL ROSS.

Grant signaled for silence and activated recording equipment.

Ethan answered.

Daniel sounded breathless.

“Ethan, thank God. Are you home?”

Ethan looked at Sarah.

“Yes.”

“I just heard something insane. Police contacted my attorney. They’re saying Sarah’s alive?”

Grant wrote on a pad.

DON’T CONFIRM DETAILS.

Ethan said, “Where are you?”

“On my way to you. Ethan, listen to me. Claire is dangerous.”

Claire laughed bitterly from the sofa.

Daniel continued. “Whatever she told you, don’t believe her. She’s been stealing from the foundation for years. Sarah found out. Claire panicked.”

The brilliance of Daniel’s strategy became obvious. He was not running.

He was coming to help.

Just as he had helped Ethan through every crisis for twelve years.

Just as he had stood beside him at Sarah’s vigil.

Just as he had told reporters Ethan was a good husband.

Daniel was trying to preserve the oldest version of himself.

Ethan almost admired the nerve required.

“Come over,” Ethan said.

Sarah looked sharply at him.

Grant gave a small nod.

Daniel exhaled. “Ten minutes.”

When the call ended, Claire stood. “You cannot let him inside.”

Grant replied, “We want him talking.”

“He doesn’t talk when he’s cornered.”

Sarah looked at Claire. “What does he do?”

Claire’s answer was simple.

“He removes the problem.”

Police prepared the house. Two officers moved upstairs. Grant remained in the living room with Ethan and Sarah. Lily was taken into the rear den with Officer Bell, where no windows faced the street.

Claire sat handcuffed at the dining table.

Nine minutes later, headlights washed across the curtains.

Daniel knocked.

Ethan opened the door.

Daniel Ross looked almost exactly as he always did: fifty years old, silver beginning at his temples, charcoal overcoat, immaculate shirt, expensive watch. His face carried concern rather than fear.

Then he saw Sarah standing beside the fireplace.

The mask slipped.

Only for an instant.

But Ethan saw it.

So did Sarah.

Daniel recovered and whispered, “Sarah.”

She answered, “You look disappointed.”

Daniel stepped inside.

Grant appeared.

“Mr. Ross.”

Daniel lifted both hands slightly. “Detective. I want to cooperate.”

Claire laughed.

Daniel turned toward her.

Their eyes met.

Something passed between them.

Fear.

Hatred.

And history.

Daniel shook his head. “Claire, what have you done?”

Claire stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.

“You don’t get to do that.”

“Do what?”

“Pretend I invented you.”

Daniel sighed as though disappointed by a child.

“Detective Grant, Claire has serious financial problems. She manipulated Sarah and—”

“Stop.”

The voice came from Sarah.

Everyone turned.

Sarah held up the black phone.

“Your voice is on here.”

Daniel looked at it.

“No, it isn’t.”

Claire’s head snapped toward him.

Sarah pressed play.

The footage showed Claire sealing the floor.

An unseen male voice said, “Faster.”

Daniel smiled.

“That could be anyone.”

Claire stared at him.

Then she started laughing.

Not because it was funny.

Because she finally understood how completely he intended to sacrifice her.

“You told me you’d protect me.”

Daniel looked at her with mild contempt.

“I barely know you.”

That sentence changed Claire more than any threat could have.

Her shoulders straightened.

Her tears stopped.

For the first time that night, she no longer looked afraid of Daniel.

She looked furious.

“You want your voice?” Claire asked.

Daniel frowned.

Claire turned toward Grant.

“There’s another recording.”

Grant stepped closer.

“Where?”

Claire looked at Daniel.

His expression finally changed.

“My cloud account.”

Daniel moved.

It happened fast.

His right hand disappeared beneath his coat.

Grant shouted, “Hands!”

Ethan shoved Sarah behind him.

Two officers surged forward.

Daniel did not pull a gun.

He pulled a phone.

He tapped the screen.

Every light in the house went out.

The security system died.

From somewhere outside came the crash of breaking glass.

Lily screamed from the rear den.

Ethan ran.

Grant shouted for him to stop, but no force on earth could have stopped him after hearing his daughter.

He reached the hallway as a figure climbed through the shattered rear window.

Black clothing.

Face covered.

Officer Bell tackled the intruder before he could reach Lily.

They crashed into a cabinet.

Lily ran toward Ethan.

He caught her and lifted her into his arms.

Behind them, the intruder kicked Bell away and reached inside his jacket.

Sarah appeared in the doorway holding the iron fireplace poker.

She swung it into the intruder’s forearm before he could draw anything.

He screamed and dropped a taser.

Grant’s officers overwhelmed him.

When Ethan returned to the living room carrying Lily, Daniel was on the floor with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Claire stood above him.

“You set me up from the first day,” she said.

Daniel smiled against the carpet.

“You volunteered.”

Claire flinched.

Sarah stepped forward.

“No,” she said. “You found someone desperate and turned desperation into a weapon.”

Daniel looked up at her.

“And you think that makes her innocent?”

Sarah glanced at Claire.

“No.”

Claire absorbed the answer.

Sarah continued.

“But it doesn’t make you innocent either.”

Grant hauled Daniel upright.

As officers prepared to remove him, his phone vibrated on the floor.

A message appeared.

Grant picked it up.

The sender was saved as T.V.

Thomas Vale.

Rebecca’s husband.

The message contained only six words.

BACKUP FILE RELEASED. CHECK THE NEWS.

Daniel’s smile returned.

Ethan’s stomach sank.

Grant opened a news app.

A breaking headline filled the screen.

DEVELOPER ETHAN COLE SECRETLY INVESTIGATED FOR WIFE’S DISAPPEARANCE — VIDEO SHOWS VIOLENT OUTBURSTS.

Below it was a video thumbnail.

Ethan recognized himself.

Claire had recorded it months earlier.

Daniel had arranged one final attack.
