Chapter 12 - THE LIVING DEAD

"Daniel?" Vivian’s voice was a ragged shriek, the revolver trembling violently in her hand. "You... you were dead! Marcus shot you in the chest!"
Daniel stepped into the vault. His face was a map of bruises, cuts, and soot, but his eyes were wide, clear, and burning with a terrifying, ice-cold fury.
He unbuttoned the top two buttons of his shredded tuxedo shirt with his left hand, pulling the fabric back.
Beneath the bloodstained cotton was a heavy, carbon-kevlar tactical vest—the one he had stripped from the security guard he tackled in the garden before Marcus opened fire.
Two flattened 9mm slugs were embedded deep into the ceramic chest plate, right over his sternum.
"Marcus aimed center-mass," Daniel said, his voice flat, hollowed out by the realization that his entire life had been a lie curated by the woman standing before him. "You taught him to always shoot center-mass, didn't you, Mother? To preserve the face for the open-casket funeral."
"Daniel..." Vivian’s voice instantly shifted, that sickening, manipulative maternal cadence creeping back into her throat. "Thank God... Daniel, she attacked me! Elena and Agent Lin... they conspired together! They were trying to steal Arthur’s trust fund!"
"Shut up," Daniel said.
He didn't yell. The words were quiet, like heavy stones dropped into a deep well.
"I heard everything, Mother," Daniel said, pointing the steel pipe at the open courier door behind him. "The executive corridor has an open intercom. I stood out there for three minutes. I heard you admit to Clara’s murder. I heard you admit to poisoning Elena’s mother. And I heard you tell Agent Lin to execute my wife."
"Daniel, listen to me—"
"I listened to you for thirty-two years!" Daniel roared, taking a massive step forward, the veins in his neck bulging. "I let you poison my mind! I let you convince me that Elena was paranoid, that she was unstable, that she was beneath us! You turned me into a coward who couldn't even protect his own child from a hammer!"
"She is not your child!" Vivian shrieked, losing her grip on reality completely. The veneer of society poise shattered into jagged pieces. "She is Arthur's abomination! Arthur designed her to steal everything I built! I gave you life, Daniel! Everything you are belongs to me!"
"She *is* his daughter, Vivian," I said, rising slowly from the floor, clutching my bleeding shoulder.
I pointed at the certified Mayo Clinic report lying among the scattered papers on the floor.
"Daniel’s DNA. Mine. Arthur didn't breed an heir to replace Daniel," I said, my eyes locking onto Vivian’s panicked gaze. "Arthur knew Daniel was weak, but he knew Daniel loved me. He knew that together, we were the only ones who could keep Lily safe from you."
Daniel looked down at the paper.
He saw his name. He saw his daughter’s name.
A single, ragged tear cut through the grime on his cheek. He looked over at the corner chair where Lily sat, trembling, her eyes wide with bewilderment.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered.
Daniel’s chest hitched. A broken, choked sob tore from his throat. "I'm here, baby. Daddy’s right here."
"Enough of this sickening melodrama!" Lin suddenly yelled.
Having recovered her breath, Lin lunged forward, grabbing her Glock from beneath the table and leveling it straight at Daniel’s head.
"Step aside, Daniel!" Lin barked, her finger on the trigger. "Vivian's wire transfer already cleared. I don't give a damn about your family psychodrama. I'm taking the drives and walking out of here, and if anyone moves, I blow your head off!"
"You're not walking anywhere, Sarah," I said quietly.
Lin scoffed, keeping the gun trained on Daniel. "And who's going to stop me, Elena? You? You're unarmed and bleeding out."
"No," I said, pointing to the ceiling of the vault. "The Chicago Police Department."
Lin froze.
From the corridor outside the vault, the faint, wailing sound of approaching sirens began to echo through the concrete garage.
Not one. Not two.
Dozens.
"What did you do?" Vivian hissed, her eyes darting frantically toward the door.
"When we stole the laundry van," I said, looking directly at Lin, "I didn't just grab towels. I used the driver's cell phone to dial 911. I reported an active bank robbery in progress by federal fugitives at First National Lake Forest. I gave them the vehicle description. I gave them the courier entrance code. And I told them Agent Sarah Lin had gone rogue with two million in laundered bearer bonds."
Lin’s face drained of color. "You bitch."
"The whole building is surrounded, Lin," Daniel said, stepping closer to his mother, his eyes never leaving the revolver in her hand. "Drop the gun. It’s over."
"It’s never over!" Vivian screamed.
She swung the .38 away from Lily and aimed it dead center at my chest. "If I lose this dynasty, you don't get to keep it!"
*BANG.*
The shot deafened the small room.
I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the impact of the lead tearing into my chest.
It never came.
Instead, a heavy weight crashed into me, shoving me sideways onto the leather chair over Lily.
I opened my eyes.
Daniel was standing between me and his mother.
His hands were locked around the barrel of the .38 revolver, wrestling it away from Vivian’s grip.
A dark, blooming red circle was spreading rapidly across the white fabric of his lower abdomen—just below the edge of the tactical vest.
"Daniel!" I screamed.
Daniel didn't fall. Driven by sheer, primal adrenaline, he wrenched the gun from his mother’s shattered fingers and threw it across the room.
Then, using his body weight, he slammed Vivian against the heavy steel safety deposit boxes.
"You will never..." Daniel choked out, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips, "...never touch my family again."
Vivian looked down at her son’s blood on her black coat, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror. "Daniel... what did you do?"
Behind them, Sarah Lin lunged for the courier door, grabbing two of the encrypted flash drives from the table.
"Nobody moves!" Lin screamed, backing out into the corridor.
She turned to run down the hallway.
She took two steps.
*"DROP THE WEAPON! FBI! DROP IT NOW!"*
A tactical breaching team in heavy body armor, led by a gray-haired man in a windbreaker marked *PUBLIC INTEGRITY UNIT*, rounded the corner with ballistic shields.
Lin raised her Glock.
*Pop-pop-pop.*
Three rounds from the point-man’s rifle struck Lin in the center of her chest.
She slammed against the concrete wall, sliding down into a seated position, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling as the flash drives clattered across the floor.
Special Agent Sarah Lin was dead before she hit the ground.
"Breach! Secure the vault!" heavy boots pounded through the doorway.
Red laser sights filled the small room.
"Weapons on the floor! Hands in the air!"
I didn't care about the lasers. I didn't care about the guns.
I fell to my knees beside Daniel, who had collapsed onto the cold concrete, his head resting against the scattered pages of his father's will.
"Daniel! Look at me!" I sobbed, tearing the sleeve from my blouse and pressing it with both hands into the wound on his abdomen. "Stay with me! Daniel, please!"
Daniel looked up at me, his eyes fading, but his lips curved into a faint, bloody smile.
"Elena..." he whispered, his trembling hand reaching up to touch Lily’s curls as she leaned over him, crying. "You... you saved her."
"We saved her, Daniel," I wept, pressing down harder as the blood soaked through the linen. "The paramedics are here! Just keep breathing!"
Beside us, two federal agents pushed Vivian down onto her knees, twisting her good arm behind her back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto her wrists.
"Do you know who I am?!" Vivian shrieked, thrashing against the agents like a demon dragged into the light. "I am Vivian Hawthorne! You can't touch me! Daniel, tell them! Tell them who I am!"
Daniel didn't look at her.
As the agents hauled the screaming matriarch out of the vault, Daniel turned his face toward me and his daughter.
"Elena..." Daniel breathed, his fingers tangling weakly with mine. "The bottom drawer... Arthur’s office... there’s a second key..."
May you like
His eyes rolled back, and his hand went limp in my grip.
