Chapter 13 - THE DNA TEST THAT REVERSED EVERYTHING

The air inside the bank vault turned freezing cold. Emma stared at the yellowed deed, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her mother’s signature sat bold and dark on the page, executed with the very same slanted flourish Emma had spent her entire childhood tracing on birthday cards and old letters.
"She didn't do this," Emma whispered, backing away from the table until her shoulders slammed into the cold steel wall of safe deposit boxes. "This is a forgery. Victoria fabricated this to frame her! She’s spent decades manufacturing evidence!"
Daniel remained frozen over the table. He didn't speak. He slowly picked up the second item from the bottom of the box—a faded hospital envelope marked *St. Jude’s Children’s Memorial, 1995*.
"Daniel?" Emma called, her voice splintering into a frantic plea. "Daniel, look at me! You know who your mother is! You saw her rip my dress yesterday! You watched her try to drown me in that fountain because she hates who I am!"
"Emma..." Daniel breathed, his fingers trembling violently as he extracted a folded medical report from inside the envelope. "Look at the date on this."
Emma rushed forward, snatching the page from his hands. It was a certified laboratory genetic sequence report, stamped with official state wax seals.
The subject was identified as *Infant Female Arden*. The comparative sample was listed as *Charles Vance*.
Emma read the concluding line out loud, the words tasting like ash in her mouth: *"Probability of paternity: 99.98%. The biological father of the child is confirmed to be Charles Edward Vance."*
Emma’s knees buckled.
Daniel caught her by the waist, pulling her against his chest as she gasped for air. The world spun wildly off its axis.
"Charles... Vance?" Emma choked out, tears scalding her cheeks. "Your... your father?"
"No," Daniel whispered, staring blankly into the cold air of the vault. "No, no, no. That’s why she screamed at the wedding. That’s why she threw you into the water."
"We’re..." Emma shoved herself away from him in sheer terror, her hands flying to her mouth. "Daniel, oh God, we’re brother and sister?!"
"Stop! Don't say that!" Daniel shouted, slamming his fist onto the mahogany examination table with such violent force that the metal deposit box rattled. "Stop it right now!"
"It’s written right there on the medical board’s letterhead!" Emma cried, sobbing uncontrollably as she backed toward the exit gate. "Your father fathered me with my mother! That makes us half-siblings! We stood at an altar yesterday! We took vows!"
"Emma, listen to me!" Daniel yelled, lunging toward her and grabbing her shoulders, his eyes wild with desperate fury. "My father was sterile! He had mumps when he was eighteen! That was the deepest, darkest secret of the Vance family! That’s why Victoria had to use an anonymous donor clinic in Chicago to conceive me! I am not biologically Charles Vance’s son!"
Emma froze, the air caught in her throat. "What?"
"Victoria told me when I turned twenty-one," Daniel said, tears welling in his own eyes as his voice broke. "She used it as leverage my whole adult life. She told me I wasn't an heir by blood, that everything I owned was a gift from her generosity! If Charles is your father... then you are the only legitimate biological heir to the Vance fortune, Emma. Not me."
Emma stared into Daniel’s tortured face, the horrific puzzle pieces suddenly aligning into a monstrous picture.
Victoria Vance had never cared about social class. She hadn't thrown Emma into the fountain because Emma was poor, or because June had died in a mill fire.
Victoria had attacked Emma because Emma’s very existence stripped Victoria and Daniel of every single dollar, every piece of real estate, and every ounce of power they held in the state of Pennsylvania.
And at that precise moment, the vault's heavy intercom system crackled to life with Mr. Henderson’s panicked voice.

"Mr. Vance! You need to come out here immediately! The state police are in the lobby with an emergency injunction from the probate court!"
