Chapter 8 - The Black Ledger

The audio clip cut off with a sickening click, leaving the master bedroom suffocating in total silence. My breath hitched in my throat as I stared down at the tablet’s illuminated screen. Ethan’s cold, calculated voice still vibrated in my ears like a death knell. *Dispersal calculation confirmed.* He hadn’t been giving me chamomile tea each night to soothe my persistent insomnia; he had been administering a slow, systematic sedative, timing my sleep cycle down to the minute so he could slip away into the dark without leaving a trace.

My trembling fingers swiped across the tablet’s interface, diving deeper into the hidden directory buried beneath the decoy tax documents. A folder marked *Project Lethe* caught my eye. My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. Inside lay dozens of encrypted spreadsheets, medical supply invoices, and high-resolution blueprints of our sprawling Connecticut estate.

Every single entry was logged with clinical precision. Dates spanning over three years—virtually our entire marriage. Alongside my daily schedules were detailed notes on my vital signs, resting heart rate, and behavioral shifts, all pulled from the fitness band Ethan had lovingly gifted me on our third anniversary. It hadn't been a token of affection. It was a digital leash.

Then I found the ledger.

It wasn't an ordinary financial record. The transactions originated from an offshore shell entity registered in the Cayman Islands, funneling tens of thousands of dollars each month into an unlisted clinic in upstate New York. Appended to the bottom of the ledger was a transfer receipt executed just six hours ago—at exactly 3:17 AM. The memo line contained only four words, typed in chilling uppercase: *PHASE THREE AUTHORIZED. NO TRACE.*

A cold sweat broke across the nape of my neck. Downstairs, the heavy oak front door clicked open. The distinct sound of Ethan’s leather wingtips echoed against the foyer’s polished marble.
