Chapter 2 - What the Camera SawFor several seconds, nobody moved.

The wind pushed lightly through the maple trees at the edge of the Harrington property, stirring leaves across the stone patio and carrying the faint smell of chlorine from the pool. Emma remained pressed against her father's chest while Richard stared at the phone in David's hand. Claire was still sitting on the padded mat, but the fury that had animated her moments earlier was gone. Her eyes remained fixed on that small black device as though it were something far more dangerous than any weapon.

Richard noticed.

That reaction told him more than words could.

"What did you record?" he asked.

David hesitated.

Claire stood abruptly.

"Give me that phone."

David took a step backward.

"Ma'am—"

"I said give it to me."

Richard shifted Emma onto his left arm and moved between Claire and David.

"No."

Claire stopped.

Richard's voice had become strangely calm.

It was the calmness Emma recognized from the rare moments when her father was angriest. He never shouted once he reached that point. His emotions seemed to retreat behind a locked door, leaving only decisions.

"David," Richard said, "how long were you recording?"

David looked ashamed.

"About twelve minutes."

Richard felt Emma stiffen against him.

"Twelve?"

"I came through the side gate after lunch. I heard Mrs. Harrington telling Marcus to bring the rope."

Marcus looked at the ground.

Richard's gaze shifted toward him.

"You knew?"

Marcus finally spoke.

"I told her I didn't think it was appropriate."

"But you did it."

Marcus swallowed.

"Yes."

Richard's eyes closed for one second.

He had hired these men because he traveled frequently. They were supposed to make his home safer. They were supposed to protect Emma when he could not be there.

Instead one had tied her to a post because his wife told him to.

"I want both of you inside the security office," Richard said. "Nobody deletes anything. Nobody calls anyone except law enforcement or an attorney without telling me first."

Claire laughed sharply.

"Law enforcement?"

Richard looked at her.

She stepped closer.

"You're actually going to call the police over this?"

"My six-year-old daughter was tied to a target."

"With a toy gun."

"That sentence isn't helping you."

Claire's mouth tightened.

Emma whispered into Richard's shoulder.

"I want to go inside."

His expression softened instantly.

"Of course."

He carried her toward the house.

As he passed David, the guard spoke quietly.

"There's something else."

Richard stopped.

Claire stopped too.

David lowered his voice.

"This isn't the only video."

Richard turned slowly.

Claire's face went white.

"What do you mean?" Richard asked.

David looked toward Emma and seemed to reconsider speaking in front of her.

Richard understood.

"Later."

David nodded.

Claire suddenly moved.

She rushed toward him and grabbed for the phone.

David jerked his hand away.

Richard stepped between them again.

"Enough."

Claire stared at her husband.

"You don't know what you're doing."

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

"You're going to destroy this family."

Richard looked down at Emma, whose fingers were still tangled in his shirt.

Then he looked back at Claire.

"No. I'm finally seeing what's been happening to it."

He carried Emma inside.

The cool air-conditioned house felt unreal after the heat of the yard. Family photographs lined the hallway: Richard and Claire on their wedding day; Emma holding flowers beside them; Ethan grinning during a Christmas morning three years earlier; all four standing together on a beach in Florida.

Richard had once looked at those pictures and believed they represented a second chance.

Emma's mother, Laura, had died when Emma was barely two years old. For years afterward, Richard had moved through life like a man trying to breathe underwater. He had built companies, attended meetings, signed contracts, traveled across the country, and returned every night to a little girl who would run toward the front door whenever she heard his key.

Then Claire appeared.

She had been warm with Emma at first.

Patient.

Attentive.

She remembered birthdays. She braided Emma's hair. She sat beside her during nightmares.

Richard had believed he was giving his daughter a family again.

Standing in the hallway now, holding Emma while she shook against him, he wondered how much of that kindness had been real.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah, sweetheart?"

"Are you mad at me?"

The question stopped him.

Richard lowered her slowly to the floor and knelt.

"No."

Emma looked uncertain.

"Not even a little."

"But Claire said you'd be mad if I told."

Something inside Richard broke.

"What did she tell you not to tell me?"

Emma looked toward the hallway behind him.

Nobody was there.

Still, she whispered.

"Things."

"What things?"

Her eyes filled with tears again.

Richard realized he was pushing too quickly.

He took both her hands.

"You don't have to tell me right now."

Emma nodded.

"Can I stay with you?"

"Yes."

"All night?"

"Yes."

"For lots of nights?"

Richard pulled her into his arms.

"As many nights as you want."

Upstairs, a door slammed.

Ethan.

Richard looked toward the staircase.

The boy had disappeared inside after the confrontation and had not come back down.

For the first time since entering the backyard, Richard allowed himself to think about him properly.

Ethan had been in their home since he was six. Richard had helped teach him to ride a bicycle. He had attended his baseball games. He had once sat beside him for three hours in an emergency room after Ethan fell from a climbing wall and fractured his wrist.

Richard loved the boy.

Not exactly as he loved Emma, perhaps, but genuinely.

Now Ethan was upstairs believing Richard had attacked him.

Claire would use that.

Richard knew it immediately.

She would tell Ethan that Richard hated him. That Emma was the reason their family was falling apart. That he needed to choose his mother.

The thought sickened him.

"Emma, would you be okay staying in my office for a few minutes if Mrs. Alvarez sits with you?"

Mrs. Alvarez was the housekeeper who had worked for Richard since before he met Claire.

Emma nodded.

Richard found her in the kitchen. One look at Emma's face was enough to make the older woman's expression change.

"What happened?"

"I'll explain soon. Please stay with her."

Mrs. Alvarez took Emma's hand.

"Of course."

Richard started back toward the hallway.

Emma called after him.

"Daddy?"

He turned.

"Don't yell at Ethan."

Richard stared at her.

Emma looked down.

"He didn't want to."

The words landed heavily.

Richard walked back and kissed her forehead.

"I know."

That was the moment his anger changed direction.

He was no longer dealing simply with a cruel stepmother and a frightened daughter.

There were two children inside this house.

And he was beginning to suspect both of them were victims.

When Richard returned to the security office near the garage, David had connected his phone to the encrypted surveillance system. Marcus sat in a chair against the wall, elbows on his knees, his face buried in his hands.

Claire was nowhere in sight.

"Where is she?" Richard asked.

Marcus looked up.

"Went upstairs."

Richard immediately thought of Ethan.

He turned toward the door.

David stopped him.

"Sir."

Richard looked back.

David had opened a folder on the monitor.

Inside were seven video files.

Different dates.

Different lengths.

Richard stared.

"What are those?"

David swallowed.

"I started saving them about six weeks ago."

"Why?"

"Because things didn't feel right."

Richard stepped closer to the screen.

One thumbnail showed Emma standing alone in the kitchen.

Another showed Claire beside the swimming pool.

Another appeared to have been filmed from the hallway outside Emma's bedroom.

Richard felt cold.

"What did you see?"

David's voice dropped.

"Mrs. Harrington threatening her."

Richard said nothing.

"And Ethan?"

David looked uncomfortable.

"Sometimes she used him."

Richard's stomach tightened.

"Used him how?"

"To scare Emma. To blame her. To make them compete."

Marcus suddenly spoke.

"She told Ethan Mr. Harrington would send him away if Emma complained."

Richard looked at him.

Marcus continued, shame in every word.

"She told Emma you'd stop loving her if she caused problems."

Richard stared at the seven files.

His entire home seemed to rearrange itself around him.

Every strange mood.

Every moment Emma had gone quiet when Claire entered a room.

Every time Ethan had become defensive without explanation.

Every business trip Claire had insisted Richard should take because she could "handle the kids."

He had thought he was providing for them.

Instead, his absence had created space for something poisonous.

A scream suddenly came from upstairs.

Ethan.

Richard was moving before anyone else reacted.

He ran from the security office, crossed the hallway and took the stairs two at a time.

Another crash sounded above him.

Then Ethan shouted:

"STOP, MOM!"

Richard reached the second floor.

Claire stood outside Ethan's bedroom gripping his phone.

Ethan was crying.

A small suitcase lay open on his bed.

Claire turned toward Richard.

"We're leaving."

Richard looked at the suitcase.

Then at Ethan.

Then at Claire.

"No," he said.

Claire's eyes hardened.

"You can't stop me."

Richard's expression did not change.

May you like

"Watch me."

And somewhere downstairs, the first police siren began approaching the estate.
