Chapter 4 - The Midnight Deadline

Elise was five feet ten inches of pure, unadulterated legal terror. Dressed in a charcoal trench coat with her silver hair pulled into a razor-sharp bun, she carried an embossed briefcase and walked with the unmistakable authority of someone who billed eight hundred dollars an hour and won every single argument she entered.

Behind her, a second vehicle pulled up: a flatbed tow truck with the county municipal logo on its door.

"Good evening, officers," Elise said, flashing her bar card before Deputy Miller could ask. "I am Claire Evans’s legal counsel. I closed this purchase on Friday. The deed was registered with the county recorder at 4:15 p.m. that afternoon. Anyone inside that structure who is not Claire Evans is currently committing criminal trespass under State Code 18.2."

Daniel’s face drained of every drop of color. Melissa took a frantic step backward, her hand flying to her throat.

"Wait," Daniel stammered, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "Elise, right? Look, this is a massive misunderstanding. We’re Claire’s family. We aren't squatters. We’re just... we were helping her move in! We threw a surprise party!"

"A surprise party?" Nora scoffed from beside me. "Daniel, you literally told thirty people through the smart speaker that Claire could never afford this place and that it was your home!"

"I was joking!" Daniel yelled, his charm completely evaporating into raw, desperate panic. "It was banter! Family banter!"

"Then why did you change the code on the smart lock?" Elise asked smoothly, taking a single sheet of paper from her coat pocket. "At 11:34 a.m. this morning, the master administrative credential on the exterior keypad was reset using an unauthorized manual override. The backup code was registered to an email account: *[email protected]*."

She turned her cold, gray eyes toward Daniel.

"Furthermore, Mr. Evans, why did you have four commercial moving vans dump forty-eight boxes of your wife’s boutique inventory into the basement two hours ago?"

The silence that followed was broken only by the hum of the tow truck’s hydraulic lift as it lowered its steel bed into the street, directly behind Daniel’s lifted black pickup truck.

"Tow truck?" my father roared, coming down the steps toward Elise with his fists clenched. "Get that damn truck out of here! That’s my son’s vehicle!"

"Your son’s vehicle is parked on an unpermitted private driveway belonging to my client," Elise countered without flinching an inch. "And unless every single person inside that house vacates the premises within ten minutes, Deputy Miller is legally obligated to execute a formal arrest for third-degree burglary."

"Burglary?" my mother shrieked, clutching her pearls so hard the string looked ready to snap. "She’s calling the police on her own mother? On her own flesh and blood?"

"You aren't my mother tonight, Evelyn," I said, using her first name for the first time in my thirty-two years of life. The sound of it seemed to physically slap her; she staggered back against the cedar post of the porch. "Tonight, you’re an accomplice to grand larceny."

"Claire, stop this!" Daniel pleaded, his voice breaking into a whimper. "Please! Melissa's parents are inside! My investors from the new gym are inside! If they see me get thrown out by the cops, I'm ruined! My funding will be pulled! Do you understand what you're doing to my life?"

And there it was.

The real question.
