Chapter 8 - The Ledger in the Floorboards

Before Vanessa could answer, the door of Room 314 was shoved open so hard it banged against the drywall.

My father stood in the doorway.

He was breathing heavily, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled from the cold rain outside. He had an umbrella dripping water onto the floor and a look of frantic, desperate confusion on his face.

"Vanessa! What's taking so long? The facility called and said—"

Mark Campbell stopped.

The umbrella slipped from his fingers, clattering wetly against the linoleum.

He looked at Vanessa, backed against the wall with two police officers flanking her. He looked at Arthur Vance standing with an open briefcase of legal files. And then, his gaze locked onto the tall, silver-haired man standing beside my bed.

My father’s jaw dropped. His face went gray, the exact color of dirty winter slush. A strangled, pathetic gasp tore from his throat.

"T-Thomas...?"

"Hello, Mark," Thomas Mercer said. The words fell like lead weights into the silence. "Happy birthday to your son."

Mark took a step back, his hand blindly searching behind him for the doorframe. "You're... you died... the clinic in Chicago..."

"I survived your attempt to erase me, Mark," Thomas said, his voice flat, devoid of any warmth or mercy. "Just as Leo survived your attempt to destroy him tonight."

"Dad..." I choked out from the bed. The sight of him—the man I had spent eight years trying to please, the man whose approval I had begged for—shattered whatever remained of my childhood illusions.

Mark looked at me, then at the butterfly stitches across my forehead, then back to Thomas. Panic, naked and humiliating, flooded his eyes.

"Leo, buddy... listen to me," Mark stammered, raising his hands defensively. "This is a misunderstanding. Vanessa told me you were out of control... she said—"

"Shut up, Mark!" Vanessa screamed from the wall, her voice sharp as broken glass. "Stop groveling! They have the camera footage, you idiot! The kitchen cameras!"

Mark’s knees visibly weakened. "The... the kitchen cameras?"

"The cloud backup was running," Detective Vance said, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming under the fluorescent lights. "Mark Campbell, you are under arrest for felony child endangerment, conspiracy to commit fraud, and filing a false police report."

"Wait! No! Please!" Mark cried out, backing into the corridor. The two uniformed officers stepped behind him, grabbing his arms and forcing them behind his back with practiced efficiency. The metallic *click* of the cuffs echoed down the hallway.

"Thomas, please!" Mark begged, tears streaming down his face as he struggled against the officers' grip. "I was in debt! I was drowning! She told me we could fix it! Vanessa came to me with the plan! She said the trust fund would save us! She said Rachel was already—"

"Where is she, Mark?" Thomas roared, his composure finally shattering into an explosion of righteous fury that made the entire room shake. He crossed the floor in two massive strides, grabbing Mark by the lapels of his soaked trench coat, pinning him against the doorframe. "Where is my daughter?!"

Mark was weeping openly now, his body shaking with pathetic, cowardly terror.

"She's alive, Thomas!" Mark sobbed, snot and tears running down his chin. "She's alive! I swear to God, she's alive!"

The air was sucked out of the room.

My heart stopped. I sat up straight, the hospital bed rattling beneath me. "Mom is alive?"

Thomas’s grip tightened on Mark’s collar until the fabric strained. "Speak, Mark. Before I let Arthur file every federal racketeering charge known to the Sixth Circuit."

"She wasn't dead!" Mark cried out, gasping for breath. "Eight years ago... she found out about the embezzled funds. She had an asthma attack during our argument... a severe one. She collapsed. Vanessa was there—she was my administrative contact at the registry back then. Vanessa said if Rachel went to the police, I'd go to prison for twenty years."

"What did you do to her?!" Thomas snarled, his knuckles white.

"Vanessa's sister owns a private care facility in Pennsylvania," Mark wheezed, his eyes darting frantically. "A closed-ward psychiatric and neurological retreat near the Allegheny forest. We... we had Rachel admitted under an assumed name—Sarah Miller. We used forged medical power of attorney documents that Vanessa generated through the county probate office! Rachel was medically incapacitated from the severe hypoxia of the asthma attack for months... by the time she recovered, we had already obtained the death certificate here in Ohio! She couldn't leave! She had no legal identity left!"

I covered my mouth with both hands, hot tears pouring uncontrollably down my face.

My mother hadn't abandoned me. She hadn't chosen art over her son. She had been locked away in a private facility three hundred miles away, stripped of her name, her child, and her life, while my father lived in her house with the woman who helped orchestrate her kidnapping.

"The Pennsylvania State Police have already been dispatched," Arthur Vance announced calmly, lowering his cell phone from his ear. "I alerted the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office twenty minutes ago when we decrypted Vanessa’s private email logs. Troopers are at the facility right now. Rachel Mercer is safe, Thomas. She is in protective custody."

Thomas slowly let go of Mark’s coat.

Mark slumped to his knees on the linoleum, sobbing into the floor. Beside him, Vanessa was being cuffed by the second officer, her face twisted in silent, bitter defeat.

Thomas Mercer looked down at the broken man who had called himself my father.

"Take them out of my sight," Thomas said quietly.
