Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail of Sins

On Wednesday morning, my attorney, Sarah Lin—a ferocious, sharp-witted former family court prosecutor whom I had hired with the entirety of my emergency savings—sat across from me in her downtown office, surrounded by stacks of newly subpoenaed financial and medical records.

"Rachel," Sarah said, adjusting her glasses as she slid a thick blue binder across the desk. "Your sister's legal team made a massive mistake. When they filed that emergency ex-parte motion claiming you were an unfit mother, they opened the door to a complete discovery audit of the Vance family dynamic. And your father’s arrogance just handed us the keys to their kingdom."

I opened the binder. Inside were dozens of pages of redacted incident reports from the Greenwich private academy Diana and I had attended twenty years ago, alongside sealed municipal settlements.

"What is this?" I asked, scanning the documents.

"This is Diana’s pattern," Sarah said, tapping the page with her pen. "When Diana was seventeen, she pushed a girl down the bleachers during track practice because the girl beat her in the 400-meter dash. The girl suffered a concussion and a broken wrist. Your father paid the family three hundred and fifty thousand dollars through an offshore LLC to sign an NDA and withdraw the police report."

My breath caught in my throat. I remembered that day. My parents had told me Diana had taken a leave of absence from school due to "mononucleosis."

"There’s more," Sarah continued, turning the page. "Four years ago, Diana’s former assistant filed a hostile workplace complaint alleging that Diana threw a heavy crystal paperweight at her head, requiring twelve stitches. Your father settled it before it reached the clerk's office for a quarter of a million dollars. Your father has spent nearly a million dollars over twenty years covering up Diana’s violent outbursts to protect the family name and her corporate career."

"They knew," I whispered, the sickening realization dawning on me. "They knew she was capable of this. They knew she was dangerous."

"They knew she was a sociopath," Sarah said bluntly. "And they enabled her because admitting she was defective meant admitting the Vance family wasn't perfect. But here is the kill shot, Rachel."

Sarah opened a secondary file containing the corporate filings of the *Arthur Vance Generational Trust.*

"Under the explicit terms of your grandfather's trust indenture, any trustee or designated successor trustee who is formally indicted on a felony charge involving moral turpitude or violent crime against a minor is permanently, irrevocably disqualified from receiving trust distributions or serving on the governance board."

I looked up from the page. "Diana is disqualified."

"Not only is Diana disqualified," Sarah smiled, a cold, predatory smile, "but your father’s attempts to use trust funds to pay Chloe fifty thousand dollars for an NDA, combined with his threats to use trust-funded litigation to retaliate against you, constitute a direct breach of fiduciary duty. We aren't just going to beat their custody motion tomorrow, Rachel. We are going to strip Arthur of his trusteeship and freeze every single bank account they have."
