Chapter 6 - Footsteps on Marble

Lucas moved instantly.
He didn't hesitate, didn't panic. With terrifying tactical precision, he caught my arm, pulled me to my feet, and shoved the safe door shut until it clicked. He snatched the silicone print, slipped his bridge tool into his pocket, and backed toward the heavy velvet drapes that framed the tall French windows overlooking the rear gardens.
"Answer him," Lucas mouthed silently in the shadows, his eyes locked on mine. "Buy thirty seconds."
My heart felt like it was tearing through my ribs. I stumbled toward the desk, my hand trembling as I leaned over the speaker unit, forcing my vocal cords to vibrate against the paralyzing terror in my throat.
"Julian?" I said, letting out a small, startled laugh that sounded shockingly authentic—the laugh of a guilty wife caught snooping where she shouldn't be. "You scared me to death! I... I dropped one of my diamond earrings under your desk yesterday when I was looking for the letter opener. I was trying to find it before you got back."
There was a silence on the line.
Two seconds. Four seconds. Each second felt like an eternity stretching over a blade.
Downstairs, through the heavy walls of the house, I heard the dull, heavy thud of the front door opening.
He was already inside.
"Did you find it, darling?" Julian’s voice came through the speaker, but simultaneously, I could hear the faint, real-time echo of his voice drifting up the curved grand staircase.
"No," I called out, raising my voice so it would carry naturally into the hallway outside the study. "The rug is so thick. Don't come up—I’m coming down!"
"Stay right there," Julian’s voice responded, chillingly close now. "I’ll help you look."
Lucas was already gone from behind the desk. He had melted into the narrow space between the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and the secondary entrance that led to the library corridor. He had drawn his suppressed weapon, holding it flat against his chest, his eyes fixed on the doorway. If Julian walked into this room and saw Lucas, the shooting would start instantly.
And if shots were fired, the cleanup crew stationed down the road would move in immediately to finish the job.
I turned around, smoothed my hair with sweating palms, pulled my cardigan tightly around myself, and stepped into the center of the Persian rug just as Julian appeared in the doorway of the study.
He had removed his overcoat. He wore his charcoal cashmere sweater, his sleeves casually rolled to his forearms. In his right hand, he held a set of keys.
His eyes swept the room.
They didn't look at me first. They looked at the floorboards. Then at the heavy drapes. Then at the books on the desk. Finally, his gaze settled on my face with the weight of an executioner's blade.
"You look pale, Elena," he said softly, stepping into the room. His steps were deliberate, measured, closing the distance between us until I could smell the cold air clinging to his sweater.
"I told you, you startled me," I said, offering a breathless, fragile smile. "I thought you were on the highway. You always tell me to stay out of your study, so I felt like a child caught with her hand in the cookie jar."
Julian smiled. It was a beautiful smile, radiant and utterly devoid of warmth.
He raised his hand and gently touched my cheek. His fingers were freezing.
"Your pulse is racing, sweetheart," he murmured, his thumb sliding down to rest directly over the carotid artery in my neck. He pressed lightly, feeling the frantic, galloping rhythm of my blood. "It feels like your heart is trying to jump out of your chest."
"You walked in like a ghost, Julian," I managed to say, holding his gaze, refusing to blink, refusing to let my eyes dart toward the corner where Lucas was crouched ten feet away. "Anyone would be startled."
Julian tilted his head, his thumb continuing to press against my pulse.
"You know what's strange, Elena?" he whispered.
"What?"
"The front door deadbolt," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hairs on my arms stand straight up. "I locked it with my master key when I left. But when I unlocked it just now... the secondary internal latch was engaged. Someone turned it from the inside."
He stepped closer, his body casting a long, dark shadow over the walnut desk behind me.

"Who did you let into my house, Elena?"
