Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

I stood up and walked back into the entrance of the ballroom, resting one hand against the polished brass railing.
Adrian was standing near Table One, surrounded by his inner circle. Vanessa was holding his arm, her eyes shining as she sipped vintage champagne. Marcus was showing a guest his platinum watch, boasting about a luxury yacht he intended to charter in Monaco next month. Celeste was loudly regaling the wife of a federal judge with stories about how Adrian had “pulled the family out of poverty through sheer genius.”
Suddenly, Adrian’s phone buzzed in his breast pocket.
He pulled it out with a casual flick of his wrist, expecting a confirmation ping from his offshore banker in Grand Cayman.
I watched his face.
The color didn't leave his skin all at once; it drained in a slow, sickening wave, starting from his temples down to his jaw. His pupils dilated. His mouth parted slightly.
He tapped the screen rapidly. Once. Twice. Five times.
He turned toward Vanessa and whispered something sharp. Vanessa frowned, pulled her own gold iPhone from her tiny clutch, and began furiously typing. Her manicured fingers moved with frantic speed. Then, her face went completely white.
“Adrian?” she whispered, her voice carrying across the quieted corner of the room. “It says access denied. It says the routing number is flagged for federal review.”
“That’s impossible,” Adrian snarled under his breath, his voice cracking. “I authorized it myself twenty minutes ago!”
Across the table, Celeste looked up from her dessert, sensing the shift in the air. “Adrian, darling? What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Shut up, Mother,” Adrian snapped, his veneer of suave sophistication cracking down the middle.
Marcus laughed nervously. “Hey, man, chill out. What’s going on? Is the wire through? Can I confirm the deposit on the penthouse?”
Adrian didn't answer. He was staring at his screen like a man looking at his own death warrant.
A notification had just flashed across his personal banking app:
*“All credit facilities linked to Vale Meridian Executive Accounts have been suspended by corporate trustee. Card ending in 4492 is deactivated.”*
At that exact moment, the two towering mahogany double doors of the Grand Venetian Ballroom swung wide open.
The room fell dead silent.
It wasn't waiters carrying more dessert.
Walking through the doors was Daniel Vance, dressed in his severe charcoal three-piece suit, accompanied by four private security officers in tactical blazers bearing the insignia of Vance Risk Management. Behind them walked two uniformed officers from the New York Police Department and two special agents from the Treasury Department flashing federal credentials.
The four hundred guests turned in unison. The society photographers lowered their cameras for a fraction of a second, stunned, before the flashes began firing again with manic fury.
Daniel didn't look at the crowd. He didn't look at Celeste or Marcus.
He walked with measured, heavy steps straight across the dance floor, his polished wingtips echoing in the hushed room, until he stopped three feet in front of Adrian Vale.
Daniel produced a manila envelope sealed with red wax.

“Adrian Vale,” Daniel announced, his deep baritone carrying effortlessly across the entire four-thousand-square-foot ballroom. “By order of the Board of Trustees of Ashcroft Holdings and pursuant to Section 14 of the Vale Meridian Corporate Charter, you are hereby served with immediate notice of termination for cause.”
