Chapter 2 - THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THE PATIO

The police arrived before anyone could leave.

Blue lights flooded the circular driveway, reflecting against the mansion windows and turning the elegant Hawthorne Ridge estate into something that looked more like a crime scene than the venue for Vanessa Mercer’s summer charity gala.

Elena sat on the edge of a stone planter while a female paramedic examined the mark around her neck.

Daniel stood twenty feet away speaking to an officer.

Vanessa had been given a towel and a robe.

She sat near the pool wrapped in both, furious and dripping.

Gloria kept insisting that Daniel had attacked them without provocation.

Unfortunately for Gloria, nearly everyone at the party had been holding a phone.

Three guests had recorded Vanessa striking Elena.

Two had captured the chain.

One had filmed Gloria laughing.

The evidence transformed the atmosphere.

People who had remained silent minutes earlier suddenly became eager witnesses.

“I saw the whole thing.”

“She slapped the woman first.”

“She put a dog chain around her neck.”

“It was disgusting.”

Elena listened without looking at them.

Their courage had arrived late.

That mattered.

She would remember it.

Daniel finished speaking with the officer and walked toward her.

The paramedic stepped aside.

“She has superficial bruising and a small abrasion,” the woman said. “I’d still recommend she get checked at the hospital.”

“I’m fine,” Elena said.

Daniel looked at the mark around her throat.

“You’re not fine.”

Elena’s eyes hardened.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

He stopped.

The sentence landed exactly where she intended.

Daniel looked older than he had four years earlier.

Not dramatically older.

Just worn around the edges.

There were faint lines beside his eyes and gray near his temples she did not remember from their marriage.

“I deserve that,” he said.

Elena almost laughed.

“Tonight isn’t about what you deserve.”

She held up the photograph of Sophie.

Daniel’s attention snapped to it.

He crouched beside her.

“Where did you get this?”

“It fell from Gloria’s bag.”

Daniel took the photograph carefully.

Sophie stood outside her elementary school wearing a yellow raincoat and carrying the purple backpack Daniel had bought for her birthday.

The photograph had clearly been taken from inside a parked vehicle.

Daniel turned it over.

SURVEILLANCE — WEEK THREE.

His jaw tightened.

“Three weeks?”

Elena nodded.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel immediately stood and walked toward the officer leading the investigation.

“Detective.”

The officer turned.

Daniel held out the photograph.

“This was inside Gloria Whitmore’s belongings. That is my eight-year-old daughter.”

Gloria heard him.

Her face changed.

“It’s nothing.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then explain it.”

Gloria crossed her arms.

“I was worried about the child.”

“You were having her followed?”

“I was making sure she was safe.”

Elena stood.

“You haven’t spoken to Sophie in two years.”

Gloria looked at her with contempt.

“That doesn’t mean I don’t care what happens to Daniel’s daughter.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“My daughter.”

Gloria glanced at him.

Then at Vanessa.

Something silent passed between mother and daughter.

Elena noticed.

So did the detective.

The officer walked toward Gloria.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I’m going to need you to explain where that photograph came from.”

Gloria recovered quickly.

“I hired a private investigator.”

“Why?”

Gloria hesitated.

Vanessa spoke from behind them.

“Because Elena is unstable.”

Elena stared at her.

Vanessa tightened the robe around herself.

“She has been trying to manipulate Daniel for years.”

Daniel turned slowly.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa laughed without humor.

“Oh, don’t pretend. She takes jobs in this house. She sends Sophie here. She constantly finds reasons to remain in your life.”

Elena felt anger rise inside her.

“I never told Daniel I was working here.”

That stopped him.

He looked at her.

“You didn’t?”

“No.”

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“You knew Elena was working in this house and you never told me?”

“She was hired through an agency.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“I didn’t think it mattered.”

“It mattered enough for you to put a chain around her neck.”

A police officer approached Vanessa.

“Mrs. Mercer, I need you to come with me.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“For what?”

“We have multiple witness statements and video evidence supporting an assault complaint.”

Vanessa looked stunned.

“This is my home.”

“That doesn’t change anything.”

Gloria stepped between them.

“She was attacked too.”

“That will be documented.”

Vanessa pointed at Daniel.

“He hit me.”

Daniel did not deny it.

The detective looked at him.

“You’ll need to give a complete statement as well.”

“I will.”

For the first time that night, Elena felt the chaos slowing.

The adrenaline left her body suddenly.

Her hands began shaking.

Daniel noticed.

“Where is Sophie?”

“At my sister’s.”

“Is she safe?”

“I think so.”

“You think?”

Elena looked at the photograph.

The truth was she no longer knew.

She immediately called her younger sister, Rachel.

Rachel answered on the second ring.

“Elena?”

“Is Sophie with you?”

“Yeah. She’s brushing her teeth. Why?”

“Lock your doors.”

Silence.

“What happened?”

“Just lock them.”

Rachel heard something in Elena’s voice.

“Okay.”

“And don’t let anyone inside unless you know them.”

“Elena, you’re scaring me.”

“I’ll explain when I get there.”

She ended the call.

Daniel was watching her.

“I’m coming with you.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

“That is my daughter too.”

She closed her eyes.

He was right.

And she hated that she needed him.

“You follow in your own car.”

Daniel nodded.

For once, he did not argue.

Two hours later, the police released him after taking his statement. Vanessa and Gloria remained at the station while officers reviewed the video evidence and investigated the surveillance photograph.

Daniel drove behind Elena through the dark streets.

When they arrived at Rachel’s small brick townhouse, Sophie was asleep on the couch beneath a pink blanket.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

His expression softened.

He had always loved Sophie.

Whatever had failed between Elena and Daniel, that part had never been false.

He crouched beside the couch.

Sophie stirred.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

Her eyes opened.

She smiled sleepily.

“You said you were in Chicago.”

“I came home early.”

Sophie noticed Elena’s face.

“Mommy?”

Elena quickly touched her cheek.

“I bumped into something at work.”

Sophie frowned.

“You’re a bad liar.”

Rachel looked between the adults.

“Can someone please tell me what is happening?”

Elena took the photograph from her purse.

Rachel stared at it.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Daniel Mercer.”

A man’s voice spoke quietly.

“Mr. Mercer, my name is Thomas Reed.”

Daniel frowned.

“Who?”

“I’m the investigator Gloria Whitmore hired.”

Elena stood very still.

The man continued.

“I heard what happened at the party.”

Daniel put the phone on speaker.

Thomas took a breath.

“You need to understand something. Mrs. Whitmore did not hire me because she was worried about your daughter.”

Elena’s hand closed around the back of a chair.

“Then why?” Daniel asked.

Thomas hesitated.

“She wanted evidence that Elena was violating your custody agreement.”

Daniel looked at Elena.

“She isn’t.”

“I know.”

“Then what were you supposed to find?”

“Anything useful.”

Elena felt sick.

Thomas continued.

“She wanted photographs of Elena leaving Sophie unattended, taking her somewhere unsafe, dating someone with a criminal record. Anything they could use.”

“They?”

“Gloria and Vanessa.”

Daniel sat down slowly.

Thomas’s voice became quieter.

“But after three weeks, I realized something else was happening.”

“What?”

“I wasn’t the only person watching Elena.”

A cold silence filled Rachel’s living room.

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Who else?”

“I don’t know.”

Thomas swallowed audibly.

“But last Thursday, a black SUV followed Sophie’s school bus for four miles.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“I took down the plate.”

“Give it to me.”

“I already gave it to the police tonight.”

Daniel stood.

“Why didn’t you tell us earlier?”

“Because I was being paid by Gloria.”

“And now?”

Thomas paused.

“Now I think Gloria was trying to create a custody emergency before somebody else did something worse.”

The call ended five minutes later.

Nobody spoke.

Sophie had fallen asleep again.

Elena looked at Daniel.

Four years of anger stood between them.

A ruined marriage.

A bitter divorce.

Vanessa.

Gloria.

Broken trust.

But none of that mattered as much as the little girl sleeping beneath the pink blanket.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

Then at Elena.

“We find out who was following her.”

Elena nodded.

“And this time,” she said quietly, “nobody lies to me.”

Daniel held her gaze.

“Agreed.”

Neither of them knew that before sunrise, police would identify the black SUV.

And when they discovered who owned it, Daniel would realize the destruction of his family had begun long before Vanessa ever walked into his life.
