Chapter 4 - The 72-Hour Ultimatum

The silence in the kitchen was now absolute, broken only by the faint, rhythmic beep of the police cruisers outside and Lily’s tiny, sniffling breaths against Grace’s shoulder.Nathan turned to the open doorway. “Sergeant Miller!”The veteran police officer who had been waiting in the foyer stepped back into the room immediately, followed by his partner. His eyes darted to the blood on the floor, the composite hockey stick, the USB drive in Nathan’s hand, and the weeping heiress.“Yes, Mr. Cole?” Miller asked, his tone strictly professional.Nathan pointed a finger directly at Victoria Vale.“I am pressing formal criminal charges against Victoria Vale for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, and child endangerment,” Nathan said, every syllable dropping like a steel guillotine. “Mrs. Higgins has eyewitness testimony and the internal high-definition surveillance footage is on this drive. Handcuff her and remove her from my property.”Victoria let out a piercing, strangled scream. “Daddy! Do something! He can't do this! Tell him!”Sebastian Vale stepped forward, his face flushed with a dangerous, mottled purple. “Nathan, you have lost your mind. Think about what you are doing. The moment Victoria is booked into the county jail, the financial press will catch wind of it. The Vale Global board will convene an emergency session by noon. We hold thirty-eight percent of the voting shares in the logistics syndicate. If you take this step, we will pull our maritime contracts. We will short Cole Enterprises stock into oblivion. You will be wiped out before the markets close on Friday!”Nathan didn't blink. He walked over to Sergeant Miller, placed the USB drive firmly into the officer's hand, and looked back at Sebastian.“Do it,” Nathan said softly. “Short the stock. Pull the contracts. Burn down every single vessel you own, Sebastian. But your daughter is leaving this house in the back of a police cruiser.”“Nathan, please!” Victoria sobbed, struggling violently as Sergeant Miller’s partner pulled her wrists behind her back. The sharp, mechanical click of the stainless-steel handcuffs echoed off the marble tiles. “You can't do this to me! I loved you! I protected you!”“You beat the mother of my daughter with a club while she was holding my child,” Nathan said, his eyes utterly cold, void of a single shred of human warmth. “You are very lucky that the law got here before my conscience disappeared completely.”Miller turned Victoria around, guiding her firmly toward the foyer. Her designer heels clicked erratically on the floor as she wept, her screams echoing down the cavernous hallways of the estate until the heavy oak front doors slammed shut, cutting off the noise.Sebastian Vale stood alone against the kitchen counter, his hands trembling with suppressed rage. His eyes moved from Nathan to Grace, then fixed on little Lily.“You think you’ve won, don't you?” Sebastian whispered, his voice shaking with venom. “You think a bit of righteous indignation makes you invincible, Nathan? You don't know the half of what your father signed. You don't know what is waiting for you at the central depository.”“Get out of my house, Sebastian,” Nathan said. “Before I have the sergeant come back in here and charge you with criminal conspiracy and witness intimidation.”Sebastian straightened his suit jacket with a jerky, furious motion. He adjusted his silk tie, his breathing ragged. “I am giving you seventy-two hours, Nathan. By Friday at five o'clock, the merger documents must be executed, or I will trigger the debt covenants Charles signed with Vale Maritime. I will call in the six-hundred-million-dollar bridge loan your father used to finance the automated terminal project. If that loan is called, Cole Enterprises goes into immediate technical default.”He leaned forward, tapping his gold-topped cane against the floor.“You can have your little gutter family, Nathan. Or you can have your empire. But you cannot have both. The clock is ticking.”With that, Sebastian Vale turned on his heel and strode out of the kitchen, his private security guards trailing behind him like vultures leaving a picked carcass. The kitchen terrace door swung closed. The house fell into an unnatural, heavy quiet.Nathan stood in the center of the room, his breathing deep and ragged. The adrenaline that had carried him through the confrontation began to recede, leaving behind an ocean of raw, unadulterated shock. He slowly turned around.Grace was still on the floor, her eyes closed, her forehead resting against Lily’s hair. The child had stopped crying, but she was shivering uncontrollably, her tiny fingers clutching the fabric of the heated throw Mrs. Higgins had wrapped around them.Nathan walked over, his steps hesitant for the first time in his life.“Grace,” he whispered.Grace opened her eyes. The pain in them was agonizing, but beneath the physical agony was a deep, unhealed wound five years in the making.“I need to get you to a hospital,” Nathan said, dropping to both knees beside her. He reached out, his hand hovering over her trembling shoulder, afraid to touch her, afraid of hurting her further. “I’m calling Dr. Thorne. He’s the chief of orthopedic surgery at Columbia Presbyterian. He will meet us at the private surgical wing.”“Nathan…” Grace’s voice was barely a breath. “Lily… she’s terrified.”Nathan looked at the little girl. Lily was watching him, her slate-gray eyes wide, solemn, studying every line of his face. She reached up with one tiny, hesitant hand and touched Nathan’s jaw, her little thumb brushing against the exact crescent-shaped dimple that mirrored her own.Nathan’s throat closed up completely. A single, burning tear broke free from his eye, tracking down his cheek. In all his years of conquering markets and crushing adversaries, he had never felt so utterly weak—and so completely alive.“Hey there,” Nathan choked out, his voice cracking into a thousand pieces.Lily tilted her head slightly. “Are you really my Daddy?”Nathan bowed his head, letting his forehead rest gently against her tiny, warm forehead. The scent of sweet baby shampoo and innocence filled his senses, completely washing away the stench of corporate treachery and blood.“Yes, baby,” Nathan wept, his shoulders shaking as the dam finally burst. “I’m your Daddy. And nobody is ever, ever going to hurt you or your mommy again. I swear it on my life.”Mrs. Higgins stepped forward, her eyes bright with unshed tears, holding a warm wet towel. “Master Nathan. The private ambulance is already pulling through the west gates. I took the liberty of calling them five minutes ago.”Nathan lifted his head and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. He looked at Grace, his jaw setting into a hard, unbreakable line of pure resolve.“Sebastian has seventy-two hours to try and destroy me,” Nathan said, his voice dropping into the cold, calculated register of a general preparing for total war. “He has no idea what I’m going to do to him.”***
