Chapter 2 - Twenty Minutes Changed EverythingFor a moment, nobody spoke.

Rain struck the tall windows behind Ethan Mercer as he closed the front door and took in the scene: Claire standing beside the office, Daniel barefoot and half-dressed in the hallway, and Vanessa frozen halfway down the staircase wearing a red satin dress that looked absurdly glamorous beneath the circumstances.
Ethan did not ask what happened.
Claire's phone explained enough.
Daniel's face hardened.
“What the hell is he doing here?”
Ethan removed his raincoat with deliberate calm.
“Claire called me.”
“This is my house.”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“What?”
“This house belongs to the Bennett Family Trust.”
His expression flickered.
Claire continued.
“You knew that when you signed the residency agreement.”
Vanessa's gaze moved between them.
“Daniel?”
“Stay out of this.”
The sharpness in his voice startled even her.
Ethan placed his briefcase on the console table.
“Claire, have you been threatened?”
“No.”
“Has he touched you?”
“Not yet.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Are you serious? You're turning this into some courtroom drama because you came home at the wrong time?”
Claire's face barely moved.
“The wrong time?”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do.”
She raised her phone.
“And fortunately, the camera heard what you meant too.”
Daniel stepped forward.
Ethan moved slightly between them.
Not aggressively.
Simply enough.
Daniel noticed.
His jaw tightened.
“You recorded me?”
Claire stared at him.
“You lied to me while I was watching you.”
Vanessa finally descended the remaining steps.
“This is insane.”
Claire turned toward her.
“You're standing in my house wearing perfume I could smell from downstairs.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You don't own Daniel.”
“No.”
Claire gave a cold smile.
“And tonight I'm discovering I don't want to.”
Daniel pointed toward Ethan's briefcase.
“Whatever paperwork you brought, take it and leave.”
Ethan finally spoke.
His voice was quiet.
“That decision isn't yours.”
Daniel laughed.
“You're her lawyer. You think that makes you some kind of authority?”
“No.”
Ethan opened the briefcase.
“But the documents inside it establish quite a few authorities you apparently misunderstood.”
He removed a folder.
Daniel's eyes moved toward Claire.
“What did you do?”
Claire remembered the notification from Marcus.
The protective transfers.
The revoked account privileges.
The transaction review.
“I protected what was mine.”
Daniel suddenly pulled out his phone.
He tapped several times.
His face changed.
“No.”
Claire watched him.
“What?”
“My account.”
He tapped again.
“Why can't I access the portfolio?”
“Because you never owned it.”
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
“You can't do this.”
“I already did.”
“You can't just move our money!”
Ethan answered before Claire could.
“Claire has not moved any property legally belonging to you. She revoked delegated authority over assets owned by her family trust and individually controlled companies.”
Daniel glared at him.
“Shut up.”
Ethan continued calmly.
“You were permitted administrative access. Permission can be withdrawn.”
Vanessa took another step backward.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.
Daniel had apparently told her a very different story.
Claire noticed.
“How much did he promise you?”
Vanessa looked offended.
“What?”
“The apartment?”
Daniel's head snapped toward Claire.
“What apartment?”
Claire caught the reaction.
Interesting.
She had guessed.
Vanessa's silence confirmed it.
Claire moved closer.
“He told you he was buying you one.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Daniel's face tightened.
“That has nothing to do with this.”
Claire laughed once.
The sound held no humor.
“My husband is sleeping with another woman in my house while promising her property purchased with money he believed belonged to me.”
She looked at Ethan.
“Tell me I'm misunderstanding.”
Ethan did not answer immediately.
“Marcus contacted me while I was driving here.”
Daniel went still.
Claire turned sharply.
“What did he find?”
“Several attempted transfers.”
The room became quiet.
Ethan removed another document from the briefcase.
“Three months ago, Daniel attempted to establish a line of credit using projected distributions from Bennett Home Group.”
Claire's stomach dropped.
“He can't do that.”
“He couldn't complete it.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“It was for an investment.”
“In whose name?” Claire asked.
Daniel said nothing.
Ethan answered.
“Northstar Ventures LLC.”
Claire had never heard the name.
Vanessa had.
Her face betrayed her.
Claire slowly turned.
“You know that company.”
Vanessa shook her head too quickly.
“No.”
“You do.”
“I don't.”
Claire looked toward Daniel.
“Who owns Northstar Ventures?”
Nobody answered.
Ethan opened his phone.
“According to the state registration filed seven months ago, Vanessa Cole owns fifty-one percent.”
Claire stared at her.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Daniel cursed under his breath.
Claire felt something colder than heartbreak.
This was no longer an affair.
It was planning.
“How much?” she asked.
Ethan looked at the document.
“The attempted credit facility was two million dollars.”
Claire almost laughed.
Seven years of marriage.
Two million dollars.
A secret company.
A mistress standing on her staircase.
Daniel moved quickly.
He stepped toward Claire and reached for her phone.
“Give me that.”
Claire pulled back.
Ethan intercepted him.
“Don't.”
Daniel shoved Ethan.
“Get out of my way.”
Ethan remained standing.
Daniel's face twisted.
He turned toward Claire.
“You've been spying on me for months.”
Claire's voice shook with fury.
“I arrived forty minutes early.”
“You've been waiting for an excuse.”
“To find you in our bedroom?”
“You never trusted me.”
Claire stared at him.
There it was.
The transformation.
The guilty man becoming the victim.
She had watched Daniel do it in business negotiations countless times.
She had simply never realized he did it at home too.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You've treated me like an employee since the day we married.”
“I treated you like my husband.”
“No, you treated me like someone lucky to be included.”
Claire's eyes filled, but she refused to look away.
“I defended you to my father.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Your father never respected me.”
“He gave you a job.”
“He gave me scraps.”
“He made you vice president.”
“Under you.”
Claire stared at him.
“You wanted my company.”
Daniel's silence answered.
Not only her marriage.
Her company.
The realization landed with almost physical force.
Daniel saw it.
His voice softened immediately.
“Claire.”
“No.”
“Listen to me.”
“No.”
He reached for her arm.
Ethan caught his wrist.
Daniel jerked away.
“I said don't touch me.”
“You were grabbing her.”
“She is my wife!”
Claire's expression changed.
“I was.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You don't mean that.”
“I do.”
Vanessa moved toward Daniel.
“Maybe we should leave.”
Daniel spun around.
“You're not going anywhere.”
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Claire saw the first crack in whatever fantasy the two of them had built together.
Daniel turned back.
“Claire, put the phone away.”
“No.”
“We can talk.”
“The talking ended when I called and asked where you were.”
Daniel's embarrassment transformed into fury.
“You humiliated me!”
Claire almost couldn't believe the sentence.
“I humiliated you?”
“You bring a lawyer into our home like I'm some criminal.”
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
“I suggest you choose your next actions carefully.”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“Or what?”
Nobody moved.
Daniel suddenly lunged.
His raised arm came toward Claire so quickly she barely registered what he intended.
Ethan did.
He stepped between them.
Daniel's wrist struck Ethan's forearm instead of Claire's face.
Ethan shoved him away.
“Stop.”
Daniel swung again.
This time Ethan caught his arm, turned him off balance, and drove a hard defensive kick into his torso.
Daniel stumbled backward.
His shoulder crashed into the decorative cabinet beside the bedroom entrance.
A framed photograph fell.
Then another.
A ceramic sculpture struck the floor and shattered.
Daniel collapsed against the cabinet.
Claire stared.
The photograph lying beside him showed their wedding day.
The glass covering it had cracked directly across Daniel's smiling face.
Nobody noticed the symbolism more clearly than Claire.
Vanessa screamed.
She rushed toward Ethan with one hand raised.
“You psycho!”
She swung.
Ethan blocked her wrist.
“Back away.”
Vanessa tried again.
The second attack came wild and angry.
Ethan reacted immediately, striking her cheek with an open hand before pushing her backward with his foot against her hip.
Vanessa stumbled onto the thick bedroom carpet.
The entire confrontation lasted perhaps six seconds.
Then silence returned.
Ethan straightened his jacket.
“Both of you stay where you are.”
Claire's phone remained in her hand.
Still recording.
Daniel noticed.
His eyes widened.
Claire looked at the screen.
“Yes,” she said quietly.
“It recorded that too.”
Daniel's chest rose and fell heavily.
“You think this makes you powerful?”
“No.”
Claire looked at the broken wedding photograph.
“It makes me finished.”
Red and blue lights suddenly reflected across the windows.
Daniel looked toward the driveway.
“You called the police?”
Ethan glanced at Claire.
“I did before coming inside.”
Daniel's expression collapsed.
Ethan picked up his briefcase.
“You were angry, unpredictable, and Claire was alone in the house with you. It seemed prudent.”
A knock sounded at the front door.
Claire felt something in her chest finally loosen.
Not relief.
Not yet.
But possibility.
The police entered minutes later.
Statements were taken.
Video was reviewed.
Daniel insisted Ethan had attacked him.
The footage showed otherwise.
Vanessa tried to say she had merely been defending Daniel.
The footage showed otherwise again.
Claire sat at the kitchen island while one officer wrote notes.
On the counter beside her were the two champagne glasses.
One hers by ownership.
Neither hers by use.
An officer approached.
“Mrs. Bennett, do you have somewhere else you can stay tonight?”
Claire looked around her home.
“No.”
The officer hesitated.
Claire continued.
“They do.”
Daniel heard her.
His face went blank.
The house belonged to her trust.
His temporary right of occupancy could be suspended under circumstances involving threats or violence.
Ethan had already confirmed it.
Daniel was told he would need to leave for the evening while legal arrangements were addressed.
He stared at Claire as though she had betrayed him.
That look almost made her laugh.
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
Daniel's shoes.
His jacket.
Within twenty minutes, they were outside.
Standing together in the rain.
Claire watched from behind the window.
For seven years, Daniel Bennett had walked through the front door believing the house, the company, the money, and the woman inside it would always be there.
Tonight, the door closed.
Claire locked it.
Then Ethan placed a printed bank record on the kitchen counter.
“We're not done.”
Claire turned.
“What is that?”
“One of the transactions Marcus found.”
She looked down.
A payment.
$187,500.
Recipient: Northstar Ventures LLC.
Claire stared at the date.
Six weeks earlier.
“That account requires my signature.”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
“I never signed this.”
“I know.”
Claire looked up.
May you like
Ethan's expression had become grim.
“Which means the affair may be the least serious thing Daniel did to you.”
