Chapter 20 - THE SHOT THAT ROCKED THE FOUNDATION

The chaos inside the Grand Ballroom had reached a fever pitch.

Julian Sterling was being marched down the center aisle in handcuffs, flanked by four federal agents, his head bowed against the blinding blizzard of camera flashes. The social elite of New York were in full retreat, clamoring for the coat checks and side exits as the biggest financial and criminal scandal in the city’s history detonated around them.

Daniel held Evelyn's hand, descending the VIP dais steps toward the center aisle.

Thomas and Maya were pushing through the crowd toward them, Thomas waving his tablet triumphantly in the air. "The Attorney General just issued an emergency freeze on all Sterling assets! The municipal court has recognized the 1994 codicil! Evelyn, Daniel—the foundation is legally yours!"

Evelyn smiled, but the cold knot in her stomach didn't loosen. Her gaze darted back toward the grand entrance.

The figure in the trench coat was gone.

"Daniel," Evelyn whispered, pulling him closer, her voice tight with sudden, suffocating panic. "We need to leave. Now."

Daniel looked down at her, sensing the immediate shift in her posture. "What is it? What did you see?"

"Someone was watching us from the rear foyer. Someone who wasn't with the press, and wasn't with the feds."

Before Daniel could respond, the massive crystal chandeliers overhead flickered violently once, twice, and then extinguished completely.

The ballroom plunged into pitch-black darkness.

Screams of terror ripped through the crowd of six hundred people. Champagne flutes shattered against the floor. High-heeled shoes scrambled frantically across the parquet as panic took hold of the room.

"Stay down!" Daniel roared, pulling Evelyn instantly behind the heavy mahogany podium on the dais, shielding her body with his own.

"Federal agents! Hold your positions!" a voice shouted from the center aisle, followed by the clicking of tactical weapon lights cutting through the darkness in narrow, blinding white beams.

Through the chaotic beams of the flashlights, Evelyn saw a sudden movement near the stage stairs.

A silhouetted figure moved with terrifying, fluid speed—not retreating, not fleeing, but advancing directly toward the dais.

A low, metallic *click* cut through the screaming crowd.

Daniel turned toward the sound.

The beam of a sweeping flashlight caught the face of the intruder for a fraction of a second.

It was not Julian Sterling. It was not Vivian Carter.

It was Dr. Finch’s former head of security—the private guard who had overseen Laura Carter’s confinement for twenty years, the man who had vanished from the hospice right before the police arrived.

In his hand was a suppressed, tactical semi-automatic pistol.

His eyes were locked dead onto Daniel’s chest.

"Daniel, look out!" Evelyn screamed, throwing her entire weight forward, her hands slamming into Daniel’s chest to push him backward down the dais steps.

*CRACK!*

The gunshot didn't sound like a movie explosion. It was a sharp, concussive whip-crack that tore through the air with terrifying violence.

The muzzle flash bloomed in the darkness like a miniature sun, illuminating the terror-stricken faces on the dais for a split second.

A heavy body slammed violently against the wooden floorboards.

A woman's piercing, agonizing scream shattered the blackness.

"Evelyn!" Daniel roared, his voice tearing from his throat in sheer, unadulterated madness as he scrambled through the darkness on his hands and knees, reaching for her. "Evelyn!"

His hands found her in the dark.

His fingers slid across her clothes, desperate, frantic—until his palm met something warm, thick, and slick that was rapidly soaking through the fabric.

The emergency backup generators kicked in with a mechanical groan.

The auxiliary halogen lights flickered to life, bathing the Grand Ballroom in a harsh, sickly amber glow.

Daniel looked down at his trembling, blood-soaked hands.

Beside him on the stage floor, lying motionless in a rapidly expanding pool of crimson that stained the polished oak, was not Evelyn.

It was Laura Carter.

She had slipped away from the protective detail at the rear of the hall, following her son into the ballroom—and she had thrown her own frail, aged body directly into the path of the bullet meant for his heart.

Her hazel eyes—the eyes Daniel had only just found after thirty years of darkness—looked up at him, wide, fading, and filled with an unbearable, radiant love.

Her lips moved, trembling, fighting for air as blood welled at the corner of her mouth:

*"I... I kept... my promise, Daniel..."*

"Mom!" Daniel shrieked, falling over her, his hands pressing frantically against the wound in her chest, blood pumping between his fingers. "No! No! Stay with me! Somebody call a medic! CALL A MEDIC!"

Behind them, near the shattered entrance doors, the assassin had already turned the corner into the fire stairwell.

And lying on the stage steps right where the shooter had stood, half-hidden under the podium, was a vibrating satellite phone.

Evelyn, her face smeared with Laura's blood, crawled across the floor and picked up the glowing screen.

The call was still connected.

A voice drifted through the tiny speaker—a voice that was smooth, calm, chillingly familiar, and speaking from a private jet climbing into international airspace:

*"Did you finish what my sister started?"*

Evelyn stared at the screen, her breath stopping entirely as the cold realization struck her like a freight train.

Vivian Carter had never been in that jail cell.

The woman they arrested at the mansion was a decoy.

And the real war for the Carter empire had only just begun.
