Chapter 3 - Clara’s Phantom

What Victoria had never understood was Clara Vance’s brilliance. Clara had not just been an artist and a mother; she was the sole heiress to the Sterling Industrial Estate, a logistics empire worth over eighty million dollars. When Clara learned her leukemia was terminal, she hadn’t left her fortunes to chance, nor had she left them blindly to David.
Clara knew how grief broke men. She knew that grief made even the strongest, most principled men vulnerable to predators. Six weeks before she passed, Clara had constructed an airtight, triple-audited dynasty trust.
Under the terms of the trust, David was granted a comfortable lifetime stipend to manage the architecture firm, but the core capital, the estate, and the massive Vance residence were held in an irrevocable trust solely for Emma Vance.
Crucially, Clara had inserted a behavioral morality clause—a legal poison pill drafted by the most ruthless estate attorneys in Manhattan. If David remarried, his new spouse had zero legal claim to a single penny of the trust. Furthermore, if any guardian, spouse, or third party was found to have subjected Emma to documented physical or psychological abuse, any spousal rights, marital asset divisions, or residential claims held by that person were instantly, irreversibly terminated.
Victoria, who had assumed David was the sole master of the fortune, had spent the last year secretly attempting to get David to adopt Chloe and amend the family estate plans. She believed that with enough pressure, David would roll the family assets into a joint marital fund.
