Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO SMILED WHEN HE WAS WATCHINGMorning sunlight spilled across the rolling green hills of Connecticut, turning the enormous Vance estate into something that looked almost unreal.

Behind the mansion's elegant stone walls, Elena moved quietly through the spotless kitchen, tying her white apron around her waist.
For nearly three years, she had worked for Mark Vance, a wealthy technology businessman whose fortune had made him one of the most successful men in the state.
But Elena had never cared about his money.
Her heart belonged to six-year-old Leo.
Leo had bright blue eyes, messy brown hair, and an imagination large enough to fill every room in the mansion. Since his mother died two years earlier, Elena had become the person who made sure he never felt completely alone.
Every morning, she prepared his favorite blueberry pancakes.
Every night, she read him stories about brave knights and lonely princes.
And whenever thunder shook the windows, Leo would crawl into the hallway and whisper:
"Elena?"
She always answered.
"I'm here, sweetheart."
But three months earlier, everything had changed.
Victoria arrived.
She was beautiful, wealthy, elegant—and seemingly perfect.
In front of Mark, she smiled at Leo.
Behind Mark's back, she barely tolerated him.
That morning, Victoria sat beside Mark on the velvet sofa, wearing a silk dress and a diamond bracelet that caught the sunlight.
"You are such a wonderful father," she whispered.
Mark smiled.
"I just want Leo to have a complete family again."
Victoria reached over and touched Leo's hair.
"I promise I'll love him like my own."
Leo smiled politely.
But Elena noticed something Mark didn't.
The moment he turned toward the door, Victoria's smile disappeared.
Her eyes hardened.
"Take that boy upstairs."
Elena froze.
"He's only playing with his blocks, ma'am."
"I don't care."
Victoria leaned closer.
"I don't want to look at his face."
Elena gently placed a hand on Leo's shoulder.
She could feel the boy trembling.
And for the first time, Elena understood something terrifying.
Victoria wasn't simply jealous of Leo.

She hated him.
And Elena had no idea why.
