Chapter 2 - THE FOOTAGE VANESSA DIDN’T KNOW EXISTED

Thomas Reed did not raise his voice. That made Vanessa angrier. People like Vanessa understood shouting. They understood public humiliation, threats, and performances. Calm authority was harder for her to control. “This is my private event,” she snapped.

Thomas shook his head. “It is a contracted event on resort property.” “I paid for this space.” “You paid for use of the space under resort rules.” Vanessa looked toward Robert. “Say something.” Robert’s face was pale.

He had finally moved close enough to see Noah’s cheek clearly. The handprint was beginning to show. Noah stood wrapped in a dry linen tablecloth Avery had pulled from an unused table. His teeth chattered.

Robert looked at Vanessa. “You slapped him?” Vanessa’s expression shifted. “He broke things.” “That is not what I asked.” Chase pushed away from the ruined seafood station. “She didn’t hurt him that bad.” Avery turned toward him.

Thomas stepped slightly between them before the confrontation restarted. “Security is on the way.” Chase laughed. “What are they gonna do? Arrest Mom?” Thomas replied, “Security does not arrest anyone.” A pause. “But police can.”

The party quieted again. Vanessa’s face hardened. “You called police?” “No.” Thomas looked toward Avery. “I haven’t.” Avery held Noah closer. She asked him softly, “Do you want me to?” Noah stared at the deck.

Avery crouched. “You don’t have to decide anything right now.” Thomas signaled to a server. “Please bring towels, a blanket, and warm water.” The server hurried away. Avery removed her light jacket and wrapped it around Noah’s shoulders.

Vanessa watched. “This is ridiculous. He got wet.” Avery looked up. “You hit him.” “He was acting spoiled.” “You tied him to a chair.” “For five minutes.” “You let Chase throw food at him.”

Chase scoffed. “It was cake.” Avery’s voice dropped. “He was crying.” For once, Chase had no answer. Thomas asked the guests to step back so staff could clean broken glass and spilled ice. Several employees moved quickly.

The atmosphere changed from party to incident scene. Music was shut off. Alcohol service stopped. Guests were asked to remain temporarily while management documented what happened. Vanessa exploded. “You cannot hold my guests here.”

Thomas answered, “They are free to leave. We are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to provide contact information.” Some people moved toward the exits. Others stayed. A surprising number stayed. Not because they enjoyed drama.

Because they had seen enough. One woman named Denise approached Avery. “I recorded part of it.” Avery looked at her. “Would you send it to me?” “Yes.” Another guest stepped forward. “I saw Vanessa grab him before the bucket.”

A third said, “I saw the slap.” The wall of silence around Vanessa began breaking. Vanessa pointed at them. “Unbelievable. You people are turning this into something.” Robert spoke quietly. “You turned it into something.”

She stared at her husband. The sentence seemed to shock her more than anything Thomas said. Avery led Noah inside toward a private conference room where staff brought towels and a dry resort sweatshirt.

Noah changed behind a folding privacy screen. A nurse who worked with the resort’s wellness team checked his cheek, arm, and temperature. No serious injury. Mild redness. A bruise beginning on his upper arm where Vanessa grabbed him.

His humiliation was harder to measure. Avery sat beside him. “I’m sorry.” Noah looked at her. “For what?” “For not being there.” “You were working.” “I still should’ve—” He shook his head. “You came.”

Those two words nearly broke her. Thomas entered after knocking. “May I?” Avery nodded. He closed the door. “Security pulled the deck footage.” Avery looked at Noah. “Do we need to watch it now?”

“No.” Thomas was firm. “Noah does not need to see it.” He turned toward Avery. “There is more than the assault.” “What?” Thomas set a tablet on the table. “I reviewed the previous ninety minutes because security flagged another issue before you arrived.”

Avery frowned. “What issue?” “Chase was entering staff-only areas.” Her expression sharpened. “Where?” “Service corridor behind the ballroom. Then the marina office.” Avery sat up. “The marina office?” Thomas nodded. “He used a keycard.”

“That’s impossible.” Only staff with specific access clearance could enter after hours. Thomas continued. “The card belonged to Assistant Events Director Melissa Grant.” Avery knew Melissa. She was working the anniversary. “Did she give it to him?”

“We don’t know.” “Where is she?” “Security is trying to locate her.” Avery looked toward the door. “What was Chase doing?” Thomas opened a still image. Chase stood in the marina office near a locked cabinet containing event deposits, guest documents, and backup access credentials.

Another image showed him holding something rectangular. A folder. Noah watched Avery’s face. “What is it?” She softened immediately. “Work stuff.” Thomas glanced at him. “Nothing you need to worry about.” Then he turned the tablet so Noah could not see.

“The camera angle does not show what he removed.” Avery felt the evening widening. First Noah. Now unauthorized access. “Why would Chase go into the marina office?” Thomas replied, “There is another issue.” Of course there was.

“Your aunt’s event deposit is overdue.” Avery stared at him. “What?” “Accounting flagged the final twenty-two-thousand-dollar payment yesterday.” “Vanessa told everyone she paid in full.” “She did not.” “Why was the event allowed to continue?”

“Robert’s company card covered the initial deposits. The final payment was due this afternoon. Melissa overrode the hold.” Avery looked at him. “She doesn’t have authority to do that alone.” “She used a supervisor credential.”

“Whose?” Thomas’s face tightened. “Yours.” Silence. Avery stared at him. “My credential?” “Yes.” “That’s impossible.” “I know.” Noah sensed the change. “Avery?” She reached for his hand. “It’s okay.” But it was not. Avery had not used her administrative login since noon.

Thomas continued. “Someone accessed the system at 4:17 p.m. under your profile and approved the event balance extension.” Avery’s stomach turned. Vanessa had spent years mocking her connection to the resort, implying that Avery’s role existed only because of family favoritism.

If somebody used Avery’s credentials to override payment rules, it could make her look corrupt. Or incompetent. “Where is Melissa?” Thomas repeated, “We don’t know yet.” A security officer knocked. Thomas opened the door.

The officer whispered something. Thomas’s expression changed. “What?” Avery stood. The officer looked at her. “We found Melissa.” “Where?” “In the staff parking lot.” “Is she okay?” “Yes.” He hesitated. “She was trying to leave.”

Thomas asked, “Did she have the access card?” “No.” “What did she have?” The officer held up a clear evidence bag. Inside was a thick envelope. Cash. Avery stared. The officer continued. “Eight thousand dollars.”

Thomas looked toward the door. “Did she explain it?” The officer nodded. “She says Chase gave it to her.” Avery went still. “For what?” Another hesitation. “To use Ms. Bennett’s login, waive the payment deadline, and give him access to the marina office.”

Noah looked between the adults. “Why would he do that?” Avery had the same question. Thomas answered carefully. “We don’t know yet.” Then the officer added one more detail. “Melissa says Chase wanted a copy of the resort’s ownership agreement.”

Avery’s blood ran cold. That document had nothing to do with an anniversary party. It was a private corporate record. And suddenly Vanessa’s years of insults about who truly belonged to the Bennett family did not sound merely social.

They sounded interested. Avery stood. “Where is Chase now?” Thomas looked toward the deck. “Security asked him to remain outside.” Avery’s jaw tightened. The humiliation of Noah had drawn everyone’s attention. While people were watching a child tied to a chair, Chase had already been inside restricted offices looking for ownership documents. The party had not simply ended badly. Something else had been happening underneath it. And Avery intended to find out why.
