Chapter 7 - The Scars We Choose to See

The Mercer mansion had never felt larger, colder, or more cavernous than it did at two o'clock in the morning.

The police cruisers were gone. The forensic team had bagged the shattered fragments of the lamp, the crowbar, and the audio recorders. The house was utterly silent, save for the steady patter of autumn rain against the tall windows.

Daniel sat on the floor of Lily’s bedroom, his back resting against her closed door. His right arm was finally immobilized in a heavy black orthopedic sling, the dislocated bone set by an orthopedic surgeon after Daniel had spent three hours giving his formal deposition at the precinct. Every muscle in his body screamed with exhaustion, but sleep was an impossibility.

In the center of the room, tucked beneath a canopy of pink tulle and fairy lights, Lily slept fitfully.

Every few minutes, her small body would jerk with a sudden tremor, her hand reaching out into the empty air, grasping for something to hold. Each time she flinched, Daniel’s heart was carved out anew.

He looked around the room. How had he been so blind?

Now that the scales had fallen from his eyes, the evidence of Vivian’s psychological torment was everywhere.

On the bookshelf, all the family photos containing Claire had been turned face down. Lily’s favorite stuffed bear—the one Claire had bought her on her fifth birthday—had been stripped of its ribbon and shoved to the bottom of the toy chest. On the desk, Lily’s recent drawings weren't of dragons or magical islands anymore; they were dark, jagged scribbles of small birds trapped inside cages of black ink.

Vivian hadn't just tried to push Lily off a balcony. She had been systematically erasing the child’s identity, crushing her spirit day by day, making her feel small, guilty, and entirely alone in the house where she had been born.

"Daddy?"

The whisper was barely audible.

Daniel pushed himself up from the floor, his knees cracking, and moved quietly to the side of the bed. He sat on the edge of the mattress, careful not to jostle her injured ribs.

"I’m here, sweetie," he whispered, brushing a damp curl from her forehead. "I’m right here."

Lily reached out from beneath the blanket. In her tiny palm, she was clutching the gold locket Claire had given her. The chain was broken, snapped during the struggle at the railing, but she held the pendant as if it were a lifeline.

"Did Vivian go away?" Lily asked, her large eyes reflecting the soft glow of the nightlight.

"She’s gone, Lily. The police took her. She is never, ever coming back inside this house. I swear to you on my life."

Lily looked down at the locket in her hand. "She said you were going to leave me too, Daddy. She said when you found out what Mommy did, you would hate me because I have Mommy’s eyes."

Daniel felt a hot tear escape his eye, tracking down through the stubble on his cheek. He leaned down, resting his forehead against Lily’s small, uninjured shoulder, his voice breaking with three years of buried grief.

"Lily, listen to me," Daniel said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Your mother loved you more than the stars in the sky. And I love you more than my own life. There is nothing—nothing in this world—that could ever make me leave you. You are my daughter. You are my home."

"Even if Mommy had secrets?" Lily whispered.

Daniel swallowed the lump in his throat. He thought of Vivian’s parting words in the ruined studio: *Open Box 3. See what your saint of a wife really thought of you.*

"Grown-ups make mistakes, Lily," Daniel said gently, kissing her cheek. "Sometimes they make terrible mistakes trying to protect the people they love. But whatever your mother did, she did it to keep you safe from bad people. And now, it’s my turn to protect you."

Lily looked at him for a long moment, searching his face with that deep, unnerving perception children possess. Then, slowly, she reached up and placed the gold locket into Daniel’s palm.

"Mommy told me to give you the key inside when I was seven," Lily said softly. "She said you would know what to do."

May you like

Daniel pressed his thumb against the catch of the locket. It sprang open. Behind Claire’s tiny, smiling portrait lay a miniature, laser-cut titanium safe-deposit key, stamped with the insignia of the Manhattan Depository: *Vault 4092 - Box 3.*
