Chapter 18 - A Trap Laid in Gold

The rain began to fall in heavy, freezing sheets, drumming violently against the wooden planks of the pier.

"What do you want, Shaw?" I demanded, clenching my fists until my fingernails pierced my palms. "The trusts are yours. Take the bearer certificates in the safe box! Vance has them! Take everything and let her go!"

Shaw chuckled, a wet, patronizing sound that grated against the storm.

"Do you really think this is about money, David?" Shaw asked, taking a step closer, his gun never wavering from my forehead. "Your father built an empire from dirt. He owned senators, judges, foreign ports. He doesn't want the money."

"Then what does he want?"

"He wants the record expunged," Shaw said simply. "The digital master copy of the birthday party surveillance tape."

I stared at him, stunned.

"The original tape was submitted into federal evidence," I said. "The entire world saw him raise that brass candle stand against Clara. It's public record!"

"The copy in evidence is a digital replica," Shaw countered, his voice sharp as a razor. "Under federal procedural law, if the original encrypted hard drive containing the native RAW file is produced with a verified cryptographic signature showing evidence of tampering... the entire conviction is declared a mistrial."

My mind reeled.

"He wants out," I whispered.

"He wants to die in his own bed at the estate," Shaw clarified. "Not on a stainless-steel prison cot with a tube down his throat."

"And you think I have the master drive?"

"I know you do," Shaw said. "Eleanor hid the drive inside the base of that very candle stand decades ago. It was built specifically to store the family's black ledger. When you tackled your father and broke the stand across the marble floor, you took the brass core."

He pulled a small digital receiver from his slicker pocket.

A red LED light pulsed in rhythm with a faint digital countdown: *00:43... 00:42...*

"Where is the brass core, David?" Shaw asked, his voice hardening into steel. "Tell me, or I let the timer hit zero."

"It's in the cottage," I lied, keeping my voice steady despite the agony tearing through my soul. "In the base of the grandfather clock in the living room."

Shaw narrowed his eyes, studying my face for any hint of deception.

Before he could speak, a deafening blast shattered the coastal night.

The windshield of the lobster boat exploded into thousands of sparkling safety-glass fragments.

Shaw spun around in shock as a high-powered rifle bullet punched through the wooden railing two inches from his ear.

Up on the bluff overlooking the pier, illuminated by the harsh flash of lightning, stood Clara.

She was holding my heavy hunting rifle braced against the hood of our truck, her eyes fierce with maternal vengeance.

"Get away from my baby!" her voice echoed across the water, amplified by the blaring truck horn.

Shaw snarled, raising his weapon toward the bluff.

I didn't hesitate.

I lowered my shoulder and charged him with the full momentum of my body.
