Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Legacy

"You have ten seconds to drop the gun, Marcus," Nathaniel said.
His voice was terrifyingly low, completely devoid of the panic Marcus expected. Nathaniel didn't look at the gun pointed at his wife's head; he looked directly into the eyes of the man he had trusted with his life for nearly a decade.
"Ten seconds?" Marcus laughed bitterly. "You don't dictate terms here, Nathaniel! I control the detonator! I control the feeds! Outside this door, four of my men have already replaced your perimeter guards! You are trapped in your own tomb!"
"One," Nathaniel counted, stepping forward.
"I will blow her brains across this glass!" Marcus screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger, the hammer of the pistol clicking back into its cocked position.
Rose looked at Nathaniel.
In that split second, she didn't see a billionaire. She didn't see a suspicious, paranoid CEO. She saw the man who had knelt beside her on the blood-soaked glass terrace, wrapping his own silk shirt around her shredded palms. She saw the man who loved her enough to walk into hell just to pull her back.
*“I will never let you fall,”* she had promised at the altar.
Rose didn't scream. She didn't plead.
Using all her weight, Rose suddenly drove the sharp, spiked heel of her bridal shoe backward into Marcus’s kneecap with explosive force.
At the exact same instant, she reached up with both scarred hands, grabbing the slide of the Glock and twisting it violently outward, using the exact self-defense leverage Nathaniel’s security team had taught the domestic staff years ago.
*BANG!*
The gunshot detonated like a thunderclap inside the concrete room.
The bullet ricocheted off the reinforced ceiling, showering them with sparks.
Before Marcus could re-aim, Nathaniel bridged the distance like a bolt of lightning. His fist connected with Marcus’s jaw with a sickening crunch of shattered bone. Marcus slammed against the wall, but he was a trained military operative—he rolled, slashing a hidden ceramic combat knife upward toward Nathaniel’s throat.
Nathaniel blocked the blade with his left forearm, the razor-sharp edge slicing deep into his flesh, spraying blood across the white wall. Without making a sound, Nathaniel drove his right knee into Marcus’s solar plexus, followed by an elbow strike directly into his temple.
Marcus collapsed to the floor, gasping for air, the knife clattering away.
Nathaniel stood over him, blood pouring from his arm, his chest heaving. He snatched the dropped pistol from the floor, racking the slide and pressing the barrel between Marcus’s eyes.
"Where is my mother?" Nathaniel whispered, his finger curling around the trigger.
Marcus coughed up a spray of dark blood, a twisted, broken grin spreading across his face.
"Too late, nephew," Marcus wheezed, his eyes rolling back slightly. "The timer isn't three hours. That was the decoy feed. The secondary trigger activated the moment the weapon discharged. You have twelve minutes."
He reached into his pocket and bit down hard on something hidden beneath his molar.
"Marcus! No!" Rose screamed.
Foam immediately bubbled from Marcus’s lips. His body arched violently in a brutal, chemical seizure, his eyes fixing on the ceiling as the cyanide took hold. Within ten seconds, his body went entirely limp.
The heavy, suffocating silence returned to the vault.
On Marcus’s wrist, a tactical smartwatch beeped. A digital countdown timer glowed red in the dim light:
