Chapter 5 - The Ledger in the Bloodline

"We have two minutes before they bring an override key," Mara said, her mind working through the tactical geometry of the room with cold precision.

She turned to Arthur. "Where is the physical registry office located? If we somehow get out of here, where does this proof actually have to go?"

"The Municipal Records Bureau on Fourth and Main," Arthur answered, clutching his briefcase to his chest like a shield. "The clerk’s vault opens at six in the morning. But Evelyn doesn't need to wait until six. Her attorneys have a digital bypass protocol through the state commercial portal that activates at sunrise—five-thirty AM. If she uploads the forged settlement before then, the property title transfers automatically through the city's automated ledger."

"Then we don't just protect Maya," Mara said, looking down at the terrified girl. "We take the fight to the vault."

"Mara, I can't run," Clara whispered, tears of frustration gathering in her eyes as she gripped the side of the mattress. A fresh wave of contractions made her knuckles turn white. "My water... I think my water just broke."

Mara froze. She looked down. A clear trickle of fluid was soaking into Clara’s slippers.

The stakes had just become impossible.

"Okay," Mara breathed, kneeling beside her sister and taking both of her hands. "Okay. Look at me, Clara. Look at my eyes."

Clara looked, her chest heaving, the pain of labor mingling with the raw terror of the hunt.

"You are going to stay here," Mara said, her voice unwavering. "You are going to let the maternity team take you to the secure labor ward on the ninth floor. There are too many nurses, too many patients, too many doctors for Mercer to pull a weapon or stage an abduction without causing a citywide scandal. He wants Maya. He doesn't want you anymore; he already has your thumbprint scan."

"I won't let you take Maya alone," Clara cried. "They’ll kill you, Mara! Evelyn won't let you reach Fourth Street!"

"She won't know I’m going to Fourth Street," Mara said, rising to her feet.

She turned to Arthur. "Give me the blueprints. And give me your car keys."

"My car is parked in the lower basement maintenance ramp," Arthur said, fumbling in his pocket and producing a set of worn brass keys. "It’s a blue sedan, spot forty-two. But Mercer has men at every exit."

"Then we create an exit they aren't watching," Mara said.

Outside, a heavy electronic beep sounded at the door lock. The indicator light flashed from red to green. The deadbolt slid back with a sickening mechanical thunk.

"Get behind the bed!" Mara commanded.

The door swung inward. Mercer stepped across the threshold, his frame filling the doorway. Behind him, two private security contractors moved to flank him, their hands resting deliberately near their holsters.

"Miss Bennett," Mercer began, holding out the red portfolio. "Let’s make this simple. The child comes with us. You and your sister can remain here and receive medical attention without criminal charges—"

Mara didn't wait for him to finish the sentence.

She grabbed the heavy chrome IV pole beside Clara’s bed, pivoting with all the momentum of her body, and drove the weighted base directly into Mercer’s solar plexus.

The heavy metal struck with a hollow *thud*. Mercer’s breath exploded from his lungs in a ragged gasp as he staggered backward into his men.

Before the guards could recover their balance, Mara snatched Maya off the recliner, tucking the small child firmly under her left arm, and kicked the heavy hospital food cart with her right boot. The wheeled cart, loaded with metal trays, hot broth, and glass carafes, slammed into the two security contractors, sending them crashing into the hallway wall in a spray of scalding liquid and shattering ceramics.

"Arthur, lock this door behind us!" Mara shouted as she bolted into the service corridor to the left.

"Security! Code Black on Five!" Mercer roared from the floor, his voice choked with rage. "Seal the elevators! Do not let them reach the street!"
