Chapter 5 - The Real Motive

*(CHAPTER 5 — REAL MOTIVE)*
Vivian didn't scream. She didn't drop to her knees in despair. Instead, something far more sinister occurred: her posture stiffened, her spine locked, and a cold, chilling laugh bubbled up from her throat.
"Do you really think the local county sheriff is going to arrest Vivian Hawthorne in her own home based on the hysterical ramblings of a child and an estranged daughter-in-law?" Vivian asked. She turned, walking deliberately toward the antique secretary desk near the grand staircase.
"Don't move," Elena warned, setting Lily down behind her, stepping forward into a defensive stance.
Vivian ignored her. She pressed a concealed release catch beneath the desk's walnut trim. A shallow drawer popped open with a soft mechanical click.
Vivian reached inside. When she turned back around, the silver gleam of a small, snub-nosed .38 revolver caught the light of the chandelier.
Daniel instantly lunged, thrusting his arm out to push Elena and Lily back behind the corner of the corridor. "Vivian, put that down! Have you completely lost your mind?!"
"I haven't lost my mind, Daniel. I am the only one in this room who understands the stakes," Vivian said calmly, cocking the hammer of the revolver with a deliberate, metallic *clack*. The gun was pointed directly at Daniel's chest. "You think this is about money? You think this is about dodging a few years in Danbury? You are so profoundly naive, Daniel. Just like your father."
"Then tell us, Mother!" Daniel yelled, veins bulging along his neck. "What is worth pointing a gun at your own son and granddaughter?!"
"The consortium," Vivian replied, her voice dead, flat, absolute. "The offshore entities weren't just tax shelters. The logistics routes your father built weren't carrying contraband luxury goods. Twelve years ago, to save our shipping lines from catastrophic collapse, I entered into an irrevocable partnership with the Malikov syndicate out of Cyprus."
Daniel’s blood ran cold. Even in the rarefied air of international maritime commerce, the Malikov name was whispered with dread. They were not mere white-collar embezzlers; they were state-level black marketeers, weapons smugglers, and human traffickers.
"Arthur didn't just find creative accounting," Elena realized, her face turning pale. "Arthur found out that Hawthorne ships were moving weapons and people."
"And when Arthur threatened to go to the authorities," Vivian said, her gaze steady, the gun unmoving, "I received a personal visit in this very house. They told me in vivid, exquisite detail what they would do to Daniel if the supply lines were compromised. They told me they would carve the Hawthorne name into his skin and leave him in a shipping container in the Mediterranean."
Daniel stared at his mother, the horror expanding exponentially, swallowing every foundational belief he had ever held about his life.
"I poisoned your father to keep them from butchering you!" Vivian snarled, tears of genuine, twisted passion finally spilling from her eyes. "I kept the syndicate happy for five years! I routed their payments! But now the federal dragnet is closing. The syndicate knows about the audit. They gave me until dawn, Daniel! Until six o'clock this morning! Either the ownership shifts to you—someone with a clean record who can stall the forensic accountants for another thirty days—or they will clean house."
She raised the revolver higher, aligning the sights with Daniel's forehead.
"If the police arrive here tonight and find Samuel alive, the ledgers will be seized. If the ledgers are seized, the Malikovs will know within the hour. By tomorrow night, Daniel, neither you, nor your wife, nor your precious daughter will survive. The only way any of us live to see next week is if that phone is smashed, Samuel's body is disposed of in the harbor, and you sign those papers."
"You're insane," Daniel whispered. "You think you can protect us by turning us into monsters?"
May you like
"I am protecting this bloodline!" Vivian shrieked. "Give me the phone, Daniel! Hand it to me, or I swear on your father’s grave, I will shoot Elena through the heart and tell the police she was the one who went mad!"
