Chapter 1 - THE WEDDING NIGHTThe chandeliers of the Houston ballroom glittered like captured stars.

Two hundred guests filled the room, laughing beneath towers of white roses and crystal lights. Champagne flowed. A country band played softly near the stage. Somewhere in the crowd, people were already talking about how beautiful Avery Ashford looked in her wedding dress.

And at the center of it all stood Clifford Ashford.

Sixty-eight years old.

Rancher.

Widower.

Father.

The man who had spent most of his life turning a thousand acres of stubborn Texas soil into something his family could call home.

He should have been smiling.

Instead, he was watching his new son-in-law.

Alan Cole stood beside Avery with a champagne glass in his hand and a smile that never quite reached his eyes.

For two years, Clifford had watched the man carefully.

Alan was charming.

Too charming.

He knew exactly when to laugh, exactly when to touch Avery's shoulder, exactly when to compliment Clifford's ranch.

But lately, the compliments had changed.

They weren't about the cattle anymore.

They were about the land.

How valuable it was.

How much the southern pasture had appreciated.

How "smart" it would be to develop part of the property.

Clifford had said no every time.

Tonight, Alan tried again.

"You've got a fortune sitting under your feet," Alan whispered.

Clifford looked at him.

"It's not a fortune."

Alan smiled.

"That's the difference between you and me. I know what things are worth."

Clifford's eyes hardened.

"I know exactly what my land is worth."

Alan's smile disappeared.

"Then maybe you should sign these."

He produced a folder.

Clifford opened it.

His stomach tightened.

A preliminary loan agreement.

Four point two million dollars.

And beneath the signature line was his name.

Except Clifford had never signed it.

"You forged my signature."

Alan's expression changed.

For one second, the mask disappeared.

Then came the anger.

"You've been protecting this dirt your entire life," Alan hissed. "What happens when you're gone?"

Clifford stared at him.

"My daughter gets it."

"Not if she's married."

The words hung between them.

Clifford finally understood.

Alan wasn't marrying Avery.

He was marrying the ranch.

And Clifford was standing between him and the prize.

Minutes later, Alan struck him across the face.

The ballroom went silent.

Clifford stumbled.

He tasted blood.

But he didn't fight back.

He simply looked at Alan.

And in that moment, he made a decision.

He would not confront the wolf tonight.

He would let the wolf believe the sheep was still asleep.
