Chapter 5 - The Million-Dollar Lunatic

Vanessa knew the corner had closed around her. The sweet, compliant socialite was gone; the desperate predator stepped into the light. A brittle, hysterical laugh broke from her throat as she smoothed the emerald silk over her hips.

"You really think you're untouchable, don't you, Arthur?" she sneered, her voice dropping the melodic facade and revealing the gutter-born malice she had buried beneath Swiss finishing school accents. "You think you can treat people like chess pieces on your board. You thought you could marry me, parade me around your society friends as a trophy to prove you weren't an empty shell, and leave me with scraps!"

"I gave you everything," Arthur said, his jaw tightening. "A home, a name, a budget larger than most corporations."

"You gave me an allowance!" she spat, her eyes wild with venom. "An allowance controlled by your private trustees! I discovered the truth three months ago, Arthur. When your head counsel, Mr. Abernathy, left his briefcase in the library."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

"The Clara Stone Memorial Trust," Vanessa whispered, her face twisting into an ugly mask of grievance. "Eighty percent of your private wealth, the Fifth Avenue penthouse, the estate in Newport, and forty percent of the voting shares in Stone Enterprises—all of it tied into an irrevocable trust. And who is the sole beneficiary upon your death or incapacitation? Mia. Only Mia."

"Of course," Arthur said calmly. "It was Clara’s family money combined with mine. It belongs to Clara’s child."

"And what was left for me, Arthur?!" Vanessa shrieked, taking a step toward him, her hands trembling with rage. "A stipend! A widow's pension of two hundred thousand a year, contingent upon my never remarrying and vacating this penthouse within six months of your death! You made me a glorified babysitter! A paid governess with a wedding ring!"

Arthur did not flinch. "You married me for money. Did you expect me to hand you the empire my wife and I built with our bare hands?"

"I am your wife!" she cried. Then, her lips curled into a sickening, triumphant smile. "Or at least, I was the one who was supposed to be left standing. You wanted to know why today? Because tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, the private board of Stone Enterprises convenes to review the executive succession charter."

Arthur felt a chill run through his veins.

"Harrison Cross and Julian Sterling have spent the last six months buying up minority proxy votes," Vanessa purred, seeing the realization dawn in his eyes. "And Dr. Robert Sterling—Julian’s dear, malleable cousin—has already signed three separate clinical evaluations declaring Mia Stone profoundly emotionally and mentally incapacitated. Severe childhood schizophrenia, violent outbursts, total inability to recognize reality."

The clown costume. The brass bells. The noisemakers. The crowd of two hundred socialites.

The pieces violently snapped together in Arthur’s mind.

"The party tonight wasn't just cruel amusement," Arthur said, the horror dawning in his voice. "It was a performance."

"It was an exhibition!" Vanessa laughed, high and victorious. "Two hundred of New York’s most prominent citizens just witnessed the great Arthur Stone’s daughter acting like a screaming, deranged animal in the middle of a ballroom. Slipping in her own tears, biting at air, unable to speak coherent sentences! Tomorrow morning, Dr. Sterling’s petition for permanent state institutionalization will be filed in New York County Court. And with Mia declared legally non compos mentis, the Clara Stone Trust dissolves into the general estate—under the sole guardianship of her loving stepmother."

She took a step closer, tapping Arthur’s chest with a red-lacquered fingernail. "You’re too late, Arthur. Harrison has already called the night editors at the *Herald Tribune* and the *Daily News*. Tomorrow's front page won't be about your steel acquisition. It will be about the mad heiress of Stone Tower."
