Chapter 8 - INDEPENDENT PROOF

Eleanor did not answer. She stood with her back against the door, her breathing shallow, her eyes wide with a cold, triumphant malice.

"Ask the dead woman's daughter," Eleanor hissed, a chilling smirk touching her bloodied lips. "Ask her what her sainted mother did in the woods."

"She doesn't know," Dr. Douglas Sterling said quietly, stepping between Ethan and his mother. "Because Margaret Cole never told Claire the truth of who she was."

The room froze once more.

Agent Marcus Vance looked up from the magnifying loupe, his professional demeanor entirely fractured. "Dr. Sterling, what are you saying? You knew about the extraction plan?"

"Arthur came to me three days before the storm," Dr. Sterling explained, his voice thick with tears. "He showed me Julianna's broken arm. He told me Eleanor had threatened to throw the child from the nursery balcony during her last manic episode. Arthur was a coward when it came to public scandal, but he loved that little girl. He gave Margaret Cole three hundred thousand dollars, a set of forged Canadian passports, and this microfilm hidden inside the pendant."

Dr. Sterling closed his eyes, a shudder running through his frail frame.

"The plan was simple. Margaret was to take Julianna out through the service gate during the storm, drive to a private airfield in Vermont, and fly to Montreal. But Eleanor... Eleanor wasn't asleep."

Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical giggle from the doorway.

"I heard the floorboards creak," Eleanor murmured, her eyes glazed over, lost in the memory of that bloody night. "I saw the shadow slipping down the servants' stairs. I took Arthur's hunting rifle from the study gun cabinet."

Ethan stopped breathing. "You shot at them?"

"I pursued them into the ravine," Eleanor whispered, stepping forward, acting out the horror with phantom hands. "The rain was deafening. The mud was up to my ankles. I saw Margaret carrying my child through the pines. I fired into the dark. I heard a scream."

Eleanor’s face twisted into an expression of sheer, unadulterated venom.

"I found Margaret lying in the mud, bleeding from the shoulder. But the child wasn't with her. Julianna had slipped down the embankment, into the swollen creek. By the time I reached the water... there was only blood on the rocks. The rapids took her."

"You're lying," Claire whispered from the floor, her voice trembling. "You're lying! My mother didn't leave her!"

"Margaret didn't leave her," Dr. Sterling interjected, his voice cutting through Eleanor’s madness like a blade. "Margaret dragged that child out of the rapids half a mile downstream. Julianna had struck her head on the boulders. She was comatose, suffering from severe hypothermia and traumatic brain injury."

Dr. Sterling looked directly at Claire, his old eyes overflowing with grief and reverent awe.

"Margaret Cole brought the child to my private clinic in Plattsburgh at dawn. She was bleeding to death from a gunshot wound to her shoulder. I operated on Margaret; I stabilized the child. But the brain damage was severe. The trauma of the physical abuse, combined with the near-drowning, erased every single memory of her seven years of life. She didn't know her name. She didn't know the Vance family. She didn't know the horror she had escaped."

Claire’s heart stopped.

The air left her lungs in a violent rush. The room seemed to dissolve into white noise.

*She didn't know her name.*

*We moved every two years.*

*The past is a fire, my darling. If you turn around to look at it, you only burn your eyes.*

"Arthur came to my clinic that morning," Dr. Sterling continued, his voice breaking. "He saw his daughter alive, but broken. He looked at Margaret Cole—a woman who had taken a bullet for a child not her own. And Arthur made the only truly noble choice of his wretched life. He told Margaret to take Julianna. He staged the bloody clothing in the ravine, planted the ransom note, and allowed the world to believe his daughter was dead, so that Eleanor could never, ever hunt her down again."

Dr. Sterling raised a trembling, liver-spotted hand and pointed straight at Claire.

"Evelyn Montgomery had no children of her own, Ethan," Dr. Sterling whispered. "The woman sitting on that floor, wearing Chantilly lace and dripping with fountain water... is Julianna Vance."
