Chapter 2 - THE CAMERA SHOWED EVERYTHING

The ambulance arrived eight minutes later.

Those eight minutes changed the Cole family forever.

Paramedics entered through the double front doors carrying equipment while Adrian stood near the staircase with one eye on Noah and the other on Vanessa. He had not allowed her to leave. He had not touched her again after stepping between her and the door, but his posture made it clear that she would not pass him without an explanation.

Maya handed Noah to the first paramedic only after carefully describing exactly how she had caught him.

“Approximately fifteen feet,” she said.

The paramedic’s expression tightened.

“He didn’t strike the floor?”

“No. His weight came down across my arms and chest.”

“You fell?”

“On my right knee and hip.”

“We’ll check you too.”

“I’m fine.”

The paramedic glanced at the swelling already forming beneath Maya’s uniform trousers.

“You’re not.”

Adrian overheard.

His face shifted.

Only hours earlier, Maya had been an employee in his household.

Now she was the reason his son was alive.

“I want both of them taken in,” he said.

Maya shook her head.

“Stay with your children.”

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

The word children seemed to remind him that Lily was still standing nearby.

He immediately crouched in front of his daughter.

“You’re coming with me.”

Lily nodded.

Then she glanced toward Vanessa.

Her whole body stiffened.

“I don’t want her coming.”

Vanessa looked wounded.

“Lily—”

“Don’t talk to her.”

Adrian stood.

His tone had changed so sharply that even the paramedics looked over.

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

A police cruiser arrived moments later.

Then another.

The security footage made the conversation brief.

An officer watched the video twice before asking Vanessa to step away from the family.

She protested.

She cried.

She insisted that she had lost her grip.

Then she said the angle was misleading.

Then she blamed exhaustion.

Each explanation contradicted the one before it.

Adrian listened in silence.

Maya had expected rage.

Instead, his expression was terrifyingly calm.

When Vanessa reached toward him, he stepped away.

“Don’t.”

One word.

Nothing else.

Vanessa stared at him.

Then her eyes shifted toward Maya.

“You.”

Maya stiffened.

“This is your fault.”

The absurdity made one officer glance up.

Vanessa pointed at her.

“You turned them against me.”

Maya was still seated on a medical stool while a paramedic wrapped her knee.

“I caught your son.”

“He’s not your son!”

“No,” Maya replied. “That’s why I don’t understand how I protected him better than you did.”

Vanessa lunged a step forward.

An officer blocked her.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

For a moment, Maya thought he might lose control.

Instead, he turned away from Vanessa and called someone.

“Daniel.”

His voice was clipped.

“I need every card tied to my personal accounts frozen.”

A pause.

“No. Not tomorrow. Now.”

Vanessa stopped struggling.

“Adrian.”

He kept speaking.

“Remove authorized-user access from the household line, the travel account, and the family-office reserve.”

“You can’t do that.”

He looked directly at her.

“I just did.”

“Those are my cards.”

“They are cards attached to accounts in my name.”

Her face drained.

Adrian continued speaking into the phone.

“Flag any transfer request. Notify security. Nobody releases funds without speaking to me directly.”

He ended the call.

Vanessa stared at him as though the financial decision frightened her more than the police officers.

That detail did not escape Maya.

Neither did it escape Adrian.

His eyes narrowed.

“What were you planning?”

Vanessa said nothing.

An officer informed her that she was being detained pending further investigation.

She began shouting then.

Not screaming randomly.

Words.

Threats.

“You think this house survives without me?”

Adrian watched.

“You think your company survives?”

He frowned.

Vanessa laughed.

“You don’t know anything.”

The officers moved her toward the entrance.

“Vanessa.”

She looked back.

Adrian’s voice was very quiet.

“What did you do?”

For the first time, she smiled.

It was not a kind smile.

“You should check what you signed last month.”

Then she was taken outside.

Adrian did not move for several seconds.

Maya saw his mind working.

A month earlier.

Signed documents.

Financial accounts.

Vanessa’s panic when he froze access.

This was bigger than a moment of rage on the balcony.

Adrian pulled out his phone again.

“Daniel.”

He waited.

“Cancel everything I signed in the last sixty days that can legally be suspended pending review.”

He listened.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“No, I don’t care what it costs.”

His gaze went to the ambulance carrying Noah.

“My family comes first.”

At the hospital, Noah underwent a full pediatric trauma evaluation.

Maya sat in another examination room while doctors checked her shoulder and knee. Nothing was broken, but she had a deep contusion, strained ligaments, and bruising across both forearms.

A nurse asked how the injuries happened.

Maya hesitated.

“I caught a baby.”

The nurse blinked.

“From what?”

“A second-floor balcony.”

The nurse stared.

Maya almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the alternative was crying.

When Adrian entered twenty minutes later, his face looked older.

“How is Noah?”

Maya asked immediately.

“He’s okay.”

Her eyes closed.

The relief hit so hard that her body sagged against the pillow.

“No fracture. No brain bleed. They want to observe him overnight.”

“And Lily?”

“With my sister.”

Adrian stood awkwardly near the door.

For the first time since Maya had met him, he looked uncertain.

“I owe you an apology.”

Maya opened her eyes.

“Yes.”

The blunt answer surprised him.

She continued.

“You saw your son in my arms and panicked. I understand that.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

“But you grabbed me before you asked what happened.”

His jaw tightened with shame.

“You accused me while I was protecting him.”

“I know.”

“You believed her immediately.”

“I know.”

Maya looked away.

“That matters.”

Adrian did not defend himself.

“I was wrong.”

Silence settled between them.

Then he said something Maya had not expected.

“I want you to resign.”

She looked sharply at him.

“What?”

His expression remained serious.

“Not because I’m firing you.”

Maya stared.

“I want you to resign because you should never feel obligated to stay in a house where you nearly died protecting my child.”

She did not answer.

“If you want another job, I’ll give you a reference. If you want six months’ salary, it’s yours. If you never want to see my family again, I’ll understand.”

Maya studied him.

“What do you want?”

Adrian looked through the hospital-room window toward the pediatric wing.

“I want my children safe.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He met her eyes.

“I want you to stay.”

Maya’s breath caught.

“But after what happened, I don’t have the right to ask.”

She looked down at the bruises spreading across her arms.

“You don’t.”

Adrian nodded.

Then his phone rang.

Daniel again.

Adrian answered.

He listened for several seconds.

His face changed.

“What company?”

Another pause.

“How much?”

Maya watched the blood drain from his features.

“When?”

He stood completely still.

Then he whispered, “She transferred what?”

When the call ended, he stared at the dark phone screen.

Maya waited.

Finally, Adrian looked at her.

“Vanessa moved eight million dollars three weeks ago.”

Maya’s eyes widened.

“To where?”

“A corporation I’ve never heard of.”

“Can you recover it?”

“I don’t know.”

His phone rang again.

This time it was the detective.

Adrian answered.

The conversation lasted less than a minute.

When he hung up, he looked even worse.

“What now?” Maya asked.

He swallowed.

“The police searched Vanessa’s car.”

“And?”

“They found passports.”

Maya frowned.

“For whom?”

“Vanessa.”

His voice broke slightly.

“And Noah.”

The hospital room became silent.

Maya stared at him.

The fall from the balcony had not been the beginning.

May you like

It had been the final step of something planned long before that afternoon.

And Vanessa had expected to leave the country with the baby.
