Chapter 5 - What Lily Carried Without Knowing

The message from the lodge changed the investigation overnight.

Until then, everyone assumed Lily had been kept alive because she had witnessed something or because Victoria wanted leverage over Emma. Graham Vale’s message suggested something more calculated.

The child was never the evidence.

So what was?

Federal agents searched Emma’s files again.

They searched the Whitmore mansion.

They examined Lily’s clothing, belongings, school records, and medical history.

Nothing made sense.

Then Clara remembered the missing shoe.

She was sitting beside Lily during lunch when the thought came back with startling clarity.

When she opened the wall, Lily had been wearing only one shoe.

Clara looked down.

The hospital had replaced Lily’s dress with pajamas.

Her remaining shoe had been bagged by police as evidence.

“Lily,” Clara asked gently, “what happened to your other shoe?”

The girl stopped coloring.

“Victoria took it.”

“When?”

“A long time ago.”

“Why?”

Lily shrugged.

“She got mad.”

Clara called Ruiz.

Within thirty minutes, investigators had the shoe from evidence storage.

It was a simple white dress shoe with a small silver buckle.

A technician examined it under portable X-ray equipment.

Inside the heel was a narrow electronic storage chip.

Daniel stared at the image.

“Emma hid it there.”

The chip contained an encrypted ledger.

Not copies.

The original transaction keys used to authorize transfers across the Whitmore network.

With it, federal investigators could trace more than sixty million dollars.

But the ledger contained something else.

Payments to Graham Vale.

Payments to private security firms.

Payments made days before Michael Mercer’s fatal crash.

Payments made days before Emma’s break-in.

And, most damaging, a transfer authorized by Victoria Whitmore herself.

Daniel sat motionless as the federal agent explained it.

They now had financial evidence tying Victoria to Vale.

But Vale was still missing.

And someone had killed the accountant at the Albany lodge.

The police placed Lily under protective watch.

Two officers remained outside her hospital room at all times.

Clara assumed she would eventually have to leave.

Her manager had already called twice.

The first time he asked when she planned to return.

The second time he told her the catering company could not keep her on the schedule while she was involved in a criminal case attracting national attention.

She understood.

Private-event companies did not like employees appearing on cable news.

Still, losing work scared her.

She had rent.

Tuition.

Bills.

Daniel found her in the cafeteria staring at her phone.

“You okay?”

“I got fired.”

His face hardened.

“Because you rescued a kidnapped child?”

“They called it a scheduling issue.”

“That’s illegal.”

“Probably.”

“I know people.”

Clara almost laughed.

“Of course you do.”

He looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t mean—”

“I know.”

He sat across from her.

“I can help.”

Clara shook her head.

“I don’t want money.”

“I wasn’t offering money.”

“What were you offering?”

“A lawyer.”

She smiled for the first time in two days.

“That is the most prosecutor answer possible.”

He smiled too.

For a brief moment, the nightmare loosened.

Then Clara saw someone at the cafeteria entrance.

A man in a maintenance uniform.

Gray cap.

Glasses.

He looked at her.

Only for a second.

Then he turned away.

Clara stood so fast her chair fell.

“Daniel.”

He followed her stare.

The man was gone.

Clara ran.

She reached the hallway and saw the maintenance uniform disappear through a stairwell door.

Daniel shouted for security.

Hospital officers converged.

Clara’s heart slammed against her ribs.

They searched three floors.

Nothing.

Security reviewed camera footage.

The man had entered through a loading dock using a stolen badge.

His face appeared for less than two seconds.

It was Graham Vale.

He had come to the hospital.

The question was why.

Ruiz ordered Lily moved immediately to a protected pediatric unit under an alias.

Clara stayed with her during the transfer.

Lily sensed the urgency.

“Is the bad man here?”

“No.”

Clara hated the lie.

Daniel rode in the elevator with them.

When the doors opened, federal agents were waiting.

Lily clung to Clara.

Then she suddenly said, “He wants my necklace.”

Everyone stopped.

Clara looked at her.

“What necklace?”

“The one Mommy gave me.”

Daniel frowned.

“Lily, you weren’t wearing a necklace when we found you.”

“Victoria took it.”

“When?”

“When I came to the big house.”

Daniel looked at Ruiz.

“What did it look like?”

Lily drew it.

A small silver star.

Daniel stared at the picture.

“I know that necklace.”

He pulled out his phone and found an old photograph of Emma holding Lily at a birthday party.

Around Lily’s neck was a tiny silver star pendant.

Ruiz asked, “Why would Vale want it?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Federal agents searched Victoria’s personal safe at the mansion.

The necklace was not there.

They searched Evan’s rooms.

Nothing.

They searched the hidden basement room again.

At three in the morning, a technician found a small velvet jewelry box wedged behind a ventilation grate.

The box was empty.

But inside the lining was a handwritten note.

Three words.

FOR DANIEL ONLY.

The handwriting belonged to Emma.

Inside the box was a torn corner of paper containing a street address in Boston.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

“My father’s old office.”

Ruiz looked at him.

“Your father?”

“He died fourteen years ago.”

“What was he?”

“Estate lawyer.”

Ruiz raised an eyebrow.

“For the Whitmores?”

Daniel’s silence answered.

By dawn, they had a new theory.

Emma had hidden more than financial records.

The shoe contained transaction keys.

The necklace may have contained something else.

And Emma had deliberately left a clue connected to Daniel’s father.

Daniel stared at the Boston address.

“My father always said the Whitmores were dangerous.”

“Why didn’t you listen?”

“I thought he meant legally.”

Clara looked at Lily sleeping behind the glass wall of the protected unit.

“Maybe Emma knew he meant something else.”

Daniel folded the paper.

Ruiz said, “We go to Boston with a warrant and a team.”

Daniel nodded.

Clara asked, “What about Lily?”

“She stays here.”

Lily’s voice came from the bed.

“No.”

They all turned.

She was awake.

Her face was pale but determined.

“I know the star.”

Daniel walked to her.

“What do you know?”

“Mommy said if bad people took it, they still couldn’t open it.”

“Open what?”

“The secret.”

“How?”

Lily pointed at Daniel.

“She said only you could.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why me?”

May you like

Lily whispered, “Because it needs your blood.”
