Chapter 4 - FRIDAY BEFORE FOUR

Evelyn met Ruth at the clinic the following morning while Daniel stayed with Lily, and the attorney returned with a single observation that shifted their attention from old resentments to the calendar: Claire had repeatedly asked Ruth how quickly an emergency caregiver arrangement could be recognized if the child was already out of state.

“Why Friday?” Daniel asked, remembering the red dress, the packed coat, and the way Ruth had kept glancing toward the gate, and Evelyn replied that the answer was likely in the deadline printed on a document she had found among Claire's proposed trust forms.

Friday was the day of Lily's early school dismissal for parent conferences, which gave Claire several afternoon hours before Daniel normally returned from work, and it was also the final business day before a loan extension on Vale Home Care expired.

Daniel had intended to be away until six, but a municipal inspection had been canceled because a safety barrier failed at the job site, and he had left early after receiving a message from Mrs. Diaz asking whether anyone was home because she could hear a child crying.

That message, he now realized, explained the speed with which he reached the house but not Claire's readiness to film him, unless the phone had been positioned for the possibility that he might arrive despite the careful schedule.

The detective, Lena Ortiz, showed him a photograph of the phone on the mantel and asked whether it usually sat there, and Daniel said no because Claire kept it in her handbag unless she was conducting video calls with the care business's creditors.

Ortiz had inspected the recording's start time: two seventeen in the afternoon, six minutes before Daniel crossed the threshold, a detail that made Claire's calm demand to save his violence sound considerably less spontaneous.

A second timeline emerged from the itineraries: Ruth and Lily were booked on a flight departing at six ten, with a prepaid taxi scheduled for three, while Claire had bought no ticket because she intended to remain in the house with Daniel.

The same afternoon, at four, a broker expected proof that the family could supply a substantial cash contribution toward restructuring Vale Home Care's debt, and without it the company would lose an extension negotiated earlier that month.

The extension itself did not need to be completed that Friday; what mattered was persuading the broker that a source of funds existed, and the copied trust papers had been prepared to look like the beginning of a lawful transfer of financial control.

Claire had told Ruth that Portland would be a short retreat to keep Lily away from her father's unpredictable temper while the adults settled their finances, a story that drew upon Daniel's real exhaustion and Ruth's remembered fear of his old financial mistakes.

But Lily, listening from the landing the night before, had heard Claire mention a lawyer, the house, and what would happen if Daniel became angry on camera, and the child had refused to pack the blue ribbon because she believed it was the one thing her mother had left that no one could sign away.

At breakfast Claire had found Lily's drawing beneath her cereal bowl, the house with the sentence MOMMY SAID I CAN STAY, and her response had moved from wounded irritation into frightening certainty that the child was being deliberately disobedient.

Ruth later admitted that the drawing made Claire lose control before the intended car trip, and that she herself had grown furious when Lily refused to rise from the floor after the water and kick, though neither woman's frustration supplied any justification for attacking her.

The precise sequence mattered to Ortiz because a scheme to manipulate a custody proceeding could coexist with genuine rage, and planning an intervention did not mean every cruel movement had been choreographed in advance.

Daniel drove past the house that afternoon without entering, seeing the front gate secured with temporary police tape and Mrs. Diaz watering the roses despite the unnerving knowledge that she had watched something terrible happen a few feet from her yard.

She walked over when she saw his truck, and he thanked her for the message before admitting he had struck Ruth and Claire, expecting judgment but finding that the neighbor had no interest in offering him an easy absolution.

“You had to stop them,” she said, “but you also had to stop yourself,” and the sentence followed him through the evening because it required him to hold two uncomfortable truths without allowing either to cancel the other.

Back at Beth's apartment Lily asked why the flight was supposed to last six weeks when Ruth had told her father it was a surprise weekend, and Daniel answered that the adults had been hiding plans instead of explaining them and that he would not pretend the details were settled before he knew.

He resisted the urge to promise that nobody would ever hurt her again, an absolute he could not guarantee, and promised something narrower: she would be told about decisions affecting her and would have adults outside the family who could hear her if he failed.

That night Ortiz called with an update from the taxi company, which had logged a special instruction from Claire requesting a pickup at the side gate to avoid upsetting the child with a crowd at the front entrance.

Daniel thought of Ruth dragging Lily toward the visible gate rather than the side passage, then recognized the failure of the scheme in that moment: the child was crying too loudly, the neighbors could see, and every second made secrecy harder to maintain.

The phone on the mantel was not a perfect instrument of control but a desperate insurance policy, one more attempt to make Daniel's reaction seem like the cause of the disaster rather than an ugly part of a disaster already under way.

Evelyn rang just before midnight to say she had confirmed the broker's demand and the extension deadline, yet the sum remained concealed behind references to an account not owned by Daniel, and they would need Claire's financial records to know precisely what she was trying to save.

Daniel looked at Anna's blue ribbon resting on the kitchen table beside Lily's untouched bedtime cocoa, and he understood that the house had never been the entire prize; the people making the plan needed money quickly, and they had come to view his daughter as the key to reaching it.

The answer to why it happened on Friday was finally within reach, but the answer to how much Claire intended to take was still hidden in the figures she had never shown her husband.
