Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Wire

The sirens were not a distant abstraction anymore; their sharp, undulating wails tore through the crisp Connecticut air, bouncing off the stone walls and old oak trees of the estate. Red and blue strobes painted the arched windows of the sunken living room, casting frantic, rhythmic pulses of color across the broken glass.

Evelyn stepped backward, her pumps crunching into the seafoam rug. "Turn it off," she choked out, her gaze fixed on the evidence bag in Marcus's hands. "Silas... give me that tape. Give it to me! I'll sign the release! I'll sign the full renunciation of the Cross trust! You can have every property in Newport, the flat in London, everything!"

"You don't own them to give away, Evelyn," Silas said, standing motionless at the edge of the foyer. His voice was steady, his massive frame an immovable wall between his daughter and the ruins of the Cross family. "The state will seize every asset you hold under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act by nightfall."

"Mick! Donnie!" Evelyn screamed, turning to the sofa in total disarray. "Get up! Get the tape!"

Donnie groaned, rolling onto his side amidst the glass cubes of the shattered table. Blood smeared across his cheek from a dozen tiny cuts, his eyes glassy and unfocused from Silas's concussive strike to his jaw. He looked at Evelyn, then at the two armed operators flanking the foyer, and slowly laid his head back down onto the carpet.

"I'm out," Donnie slurred, spitting a mouthful of red saliva onto the rug. "I didn't... sign up for no murder rap. She's crazy. She's out of her mind."

"Mick!" Evelyn lunged toward the debt collector pinned against the wall. "You have a piece in your boot! Pull it! Shoot the guards!"

"Are you insane?!" Mick shrieked, pressing himself flat against the wallpaper, his hands held even higher in the air. "Lady, that's Silas Vance! That's his private security! If I touch a piece, they'll turn me into Swiss cheese before I clear leather! Officer! Officers!" Mick started yelling toward the shattered front entrance. "We're in here! I surrender! I'm completely unarmed!"

Heavy, disciplined footsteps pounded up the exterior stone steps. Three Greenwich police officers in navy tactical uniforms swept through the splintered double doors, service weapons drawn in the low-ready position. Behind them walked Commander Thomas Vance—no relation to Silas, but a decorated Marine veteran who had taken command of the local precinct forty-eight hours earlier.

Commander Thomas’s cold, flinty eyes swept the foyer. He saw Silas Vance holding his four-year-old daughter; he saw the two private operatives standing with hands clasped in plain view; he saw Donnie bleeding on the broken table and Mick cowering by the lamp.

"Silas," Commander Thomas said, his voice level, authoritative. "Status?"

"Perimeter secure, Commander," Silas said evenly. "The child is unharmed. The intruders are contained."

"Harrington!" Evelyn screamed, shoving her way past a floor lamp toward the officers. "Where is Chief Harrington? I demand to speak to Harrington! This man broke into my home! He assaulted my guests! He's trespassing on Cross private property!"

Commander Thomas stepped forward, his tall, weathered frame easily blocking Evelyn's path. He didn't unholster his sidearm, but his hand rested firmly on the butt of his Glock.

"Miss Cross, Chief Harrington took early retirement two weeks ago following a Department of Justice inquiry into municipal bribery," Thomas said, his tone devoid of warmth. "I am Commander Thomas. And according to the town registrar’s deed, this property has been owned exclusively by Vance Capital Real Estate Holdings since August of 1992. You are not the owner; you are an evicted tenant whose stay expired at noon today."

Evelyn staggered backward as if struck. "No... no, that's impossible. Christian told me—"

"Christian Cross was taken into custody at Teterboro Airport at 4:15 AM by federal marshals," Thomas continued mercilessly. "A warrant for your arrest on charges of kidnapping, extortion, and interstate conspiracy was signed by a federal judge in New Haven three hours ago."

"Wait!" Marcus stepped forward from the shadow of the marble pillar. He held up the clear evidence bag containing the black VHS tape. "Commander, this camcorder was running during the commission of the kidnapping. It contains a direct, detailed confession by the suspect to the premeditated murder by poisoning of Julianna Cross-Vance in 1991."

Commander Thomas looked at the tape, then turned his gaze back to Evelyn. His expression hardened into pure disgust. "Secure the tape. Bag the camcorder and the tripod. Officer Hayes, cuff her."

A young, broad-shouldered officer stepped forward with a pair of steel Smith & Wesson handcuffs.

"Get your hands off me!" Evelyn shrieked, thrashing her arms wildly, her manicured nails clawing at the officer's navy sleeves. "Do you know who my grandfather was? He built the hospital in this town! He built the library! Silas! Tell them! Tell them to stop!"

The officer twisted Evelyn's arm behind her back with a sharp, practiced motion. A loud *click-clack* of ratcheting steel cut through her screaming. In three seconds, her wrists were bound tightly behind her waist, her designer slacks rumpled, her golden hair clinging to the sweat on her neck.

"You're a monster, Silas!" Evelyn wailed as Hayes hauled her toward the broken entryway. "You took everything from me! You took my sister, you took my money, you took my name!"

Silas didn't answer. He didn't even look at her as she was dragged past him. His entire focus was on the small, trembling girl in his arms.

Clara peeked out from Silas’s coat, watching her aunt being led away into the flashing red lights of the cruiser parked on the circular driveway. The little girl reached up, her tiny fingers gently touching the red, angry welt on her own cheek.

"Daddy?" Clara whispered, her voice fragile, barely audible over the crackle of the police radios. "Is Aunt Evie going to hurt us anymore?"

Silas brought his hand up, his large, calloused fingers gently stroking her golden curls, shielding her eyes from the spectacle of the arrest.

May you like

"Never again, Clara," Silas said, his voice dropping to a warm, unbreakable whisper. "The shadows are gone. Daddy is taking you home."
