Chapter 27 - Shadows in the Bedrock

In the pitch-black fog, chaos was an equalizer.
Muzzle flashes strobed through the dense chemical haze like miniature lightning strikes, illuminating brief, violent snapshots of the room.
A mercenary screamed as a shadow took him down from behind.
I didn't need eyes.
Five years in a wheelchair had taught me to read a room through vibrations, airflow, and sound.
I dropped low to the floor, where the air was clearer beneath the swirling chemical powder.
Heavy tactical boots crunched on the gravel to my left.
I surged upward from the crouch, wrapping my arm around the mercenary's neck while my right hand clamped down on his rifle barrel, driving it toward the ceiling.
A burst of automatic fire chewed into the stone overhead, showering us with burning sparks.
I drove my knee violently into the nerve cluster behind his thigh.
His leg buckled.
I wrenched the rifle from his grip, spun him around, and slammed his helmeted head into the reinforced steel frame of the hydraulic console.
He went limp, his weapon clattering across the concrete.
Across the room, Elena was moving like a phantom.
A suppressed double-tap echoed through the dark, followed by the heavy thud of a second guard collapsing against the vault wall.
"Two down!" Elena’s voice called out through the smoke, cold and focused.
"Where is Arthur?" I shouted, scanning the darkness as emergency red backup lights slowly flickered to life.
The dim crimson illumination cast long, sinister shadows across the subterranean vault.
Alistair Thorne was cowering behind the open security hatch of the escape tunnel, clutching a heavy leather briefcase to his chest.
Arthur was standing inside the entrance of the escape elevator shaft, his hand resting on the manual override lever.
He saw the guards down on the floor and realized his extraction was compromised.
Without a shred of hesitation, Arthur reached out and grabbed Alistair by the collar of his coat.
"Arthur! What are you doing?!" Alistair shrieked in terror.
"Clearing the dead weight," Arthur replied coldly.
With a brutal, calculated shove, Arthur hurled Alistair out onto the concrete floor, directly into the line of fire, while he stepped inside the reinforced escape capsule and slammed the iron grille shut.
Alistair crashed to the ground, the leather briefcase flying open.
Thousands of high-denomination bearer certificates spilled across the bloody floor like worthless leaves.
Elena stepped out from behind the pillar, her pistol aimed directly at Alistair’s forehead.
"No! Please!" Alistair sobbed, raising his one good arm. "I was following orders! Arthur promised me the Mediterranean holdings! He promised me—"
"Quiet," Elena snapped, kicking him flat onto his back and planting her boot on his broken arm.
Alistair howled in agony.
I ignored him, sprinting across the bloody floor toward the iron grille of the escape capsule.
Arthur looked through the heavy bars, watching me approach with that same infuriating, unshakeable calm.
"You're too late, Julian," Arthur said, pressing the green button on the titanium detonator. "The thermite inside the main vault is burning. And this elevator car rises straight to the private river dock."
"You're not leaving, Father," I said, reaching between the bars to seize the manual hydraulic release valve.
My muscles burned as I threw my entire weight against the rusted iron wheel, fighting against the motorized ascent.
The gears groaned under the strain, sparks showering from the overhead winch.
Arthur’s eyes widened slightly as the elevator car shuddered, halted three feet off the ground, and began to slide slowly back down.
"You stubborn fool," Arthur hissed, pulling a compact derringer from his coat pocket and leveling it through the bars at my heart. "You really are your mother's son."
Before he could squeeze the trigger, Marcus dropped through the open ventilation shaft behind the elevator, landing on the roof of the car with a bone-jarring crash.
Marcus drove a heavy steel crowbar through the roof hatch, smashing the mechanism and jamming the emergency brakes into the steel guide rails.

The elevator car ground to a violent, permanent halt.
Arthur was trapped inside the cage.
