Chapter 4 - The House Built on SecretsThe emergency board meeting lasted ninety-three minutes, but Emily heard almost none of it after seeing the transfer authorization.

Five million dollars had left a trust she barely understood and entered a company she had never heard of, and the authorization carried the same almost-perfect imitation of her signature.

Elena Price took one look at the document and immediately asked for access to the trust records.

Robert gave it.

The first discovery came eleven minutes later.

There had not been one transfer.

There had been four.

Five million.

Three million.

Two point five million.

And another seven hundred fifty thousand.

More than eleven million dollars had moved over eighteen months.

Emily sat at her father’s kitchen table, staring at numbers that felt unreal.

“They stole eleven million dollars from me?”

Elena did not answer immediately.

“We know the money left accounts associated with your trust.”

“That sounds like stealing.”

“We need to establish authorization, routing, and beneficial ownership before using legal conclusions.”

Emily looked at Robert.

“She’s very careful.”

“That’s why I hire her.”

Emily rubbed her forehead.

“Where did the money go?”

“Three entities.”

Elena pointed to the screen.

“East Harrow Holdings, Whitmore Hospitality Services, and something called Green Briar Consulting.”

Robert frowned.

“I know the first two.”

“Green Briar?”

“No.”

Elena opened another record.

“The company was incorporated eighteen months ago.”

“By who?”

“A nominee service in Delaware.”

Emily stared at her.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning someone wanted distance between themselves and the company.”

David Mercer entered from the hallway.

“I spoke to the trustee.”

Robert looked up.

“And?”

“He insists every authorization arrived through Whitmore Family Office using credentials associated with Emily.”

Emily’s throat tightened.

“Credentials?”

“Digital access.”

“I never used digital access.”

David nodded.

“That’s a problem.”

Emily stood.

“Everything seems to be a problem.”

Lily appeared in the doorway.

Emily immediately softened.

“Hey.”

“Can I call Dad?”

The room fell silent.

Emily looked at Robert.

He deliberately looked away.

The choice was hers.

“Yes.”

Lily walked closer.

“Now?”

Emily nodded.

“Let’s go upstairs.”

She took Lily into the guest bedroom she had used during college.

The floral curtains were still there.

So was the old bookshelf.

Emily sat on the bed while Lily used her tablet to call Richard.

He answered immediately.

“Lily?”

His voice cracked.

Lily smiled for the first time since the party.

“Hi, Dad.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

Emily leaned closer.

“Don’t answer that.”

Richard heard her.

“Emily.”

“This call is for Lily.”

Richard inhaled.

“Baby, I’m sorry you saw what happened.”

Lily looked at the screen.

“Why were you mean to Mom?”

Richard went silent.

Emily’s heart broke for him despite everything.

Not because he deserved rescue.

Because every parent eventually faced the moment when their child saw them clearly.

“I was angry.”

“You told her she wasn’t family.”

“No, sweetheart.”

“You said she couldn’t sit there.”

Richard rubbed his face.

“I made a mistake.”

Lily looked toward Emily.

“Are you going to say sorry?”

Richard stared through the screen.

“Yes.”

Lily waited.

Richard’s eyes shifted to Emily.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily knew the apology was incomplete.

But she did not interrupt.

Lily deserved whatever honest piece of her father he could offer.

After the call ended, Emily tucked Lily under a blanket and stayed until she fell asleep.

When Emily returned downstairs, Elena had more news.

“Green Briar Consulting paid three people.”

Emily sat down.

“Who?”

“A law firm, a property appraiser, and Samantha Reed.”

Margaret’s assistant.

“How much?”

“Four hundred thousand over a year.”

Emily remembered Samantha standing behind Margaret at dozens of lunches, always silent, always holding a tablet.

“Could Samantha be the person texting me?”

Elena considered it.

“Possible.”

Robert crossed his arms.

“Or someone wants us to think that.”

Emily’s phone rang.

Richard.

She stared at it.

Robert said nothing.

Emily answered.

“What?”

Richard’s breathing sounded rough.

“We need to meet.”

“No.”

“Emily, I swear to God, I did not take money from your trust.”

“You signed documents.”

“I signed documents for East Harrow.”

“With my name on them?”

Silence.

Emily stood.

“Richard.”

“I thought they were authorized.”

“By me?”

“My mother said you signed them.”

Emily laughed once.

A terrible sound.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don’t know what to expect anymore.”

His voice changed.

Less angry.

More frightened.

“The board suspended me.”

Emily paused.

“As CEO?”

“Pending review.”

“And your mother?”

“She resigned as foundation chair twenty minutes ago.”

Emily walked toward the window.

Outside, evening had begun to fall across the garden.

“Good.”

Richard was silent.

Emily surprised herself with the word.

But she did not regret it.

“Do you remember the first apartment we rented?”

Richard asked suddenly.

Emily closed her eyes.

“Don’t.”

“No, listen.”

“I said don’t.”

“We had nothing.”

“We had plenty.”

“We ate takeout on the floor.”

“And we were happy.”

Richard’s voice broke.

“Exactly.”

Emily pressed her fingers against the glass.

“What happened to you?”

Silence.

Then Richard said something she did not expect.

“I started believing them.”

“Who?”

“My family.”

He swallowed.

“They kept telling me I was carrying you.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“They said your father had cut you off because you married me.”

“That was never true.”

“I know that now.”

Emily almost laughed.

“Because you found out he’s rich?”

“No.”

Richard’s answer came immediately.

“Because Lily looked at me today like she didn’t know who I was.”

That stopped her.

Richard continued.

“I became someone I hate.”

Emily did not rescue him from that truth.

After a long pause, she asked, “Who is Green Briar Consulting?”

Silence.

Richard’s breathing changed.

“You know about Green Briar?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“Emily, listen to me.”

His voice became urgent.

“If Green Briar received money from your trust, you need to stay away from my mother.”

Emily’s skin went cold.

“Why?”

“I found the name six months ago.”

“And?”

“I asked her about it.”

“What did she say?”

“That it was a consulting company for East Harrow.”

“And you believed her?”

“No.”

Emily waited.

Richard lowered his voice.

“I hired someone to look into it.”

Robert and Elena were watching her now.

“What did they find?”

Richard hesitated.

“That Samantha Reed owns it.”

Emily looked at Elena.

Elena immediately began typing.

“But that’s not the worst part,” Richard said.

Emily gripped the phone.

“What is?”

“Samantha doesn’t control the bank account.”

“Who does?”

May you like

Richard whispered the answer.

“My mother.”
