Chapter 15 - The Federal Hammer

Sirens wailed in the distance.

The faint, rhythmic wailing began five miles away, echoing across the Cicero industrial corridor, growing louder, sharper, multiplying with every passing second.

Marcus Sterling began to thrash against his handcuffs, terror turning his face gray. “Charlotte! What did you do? Who did you call?”

“The FBI Special Operations Division, Marcus,” I answered calmly, looking at my watch. “And the Illinois State Police Bureau of Investigation. They’ve been tracking David’s encrypted transponder since midnight.”

“You’re crazy!” Richard screamed, his voice cracking into madness. “They’ll arrest all of us! Julian took the money! You’re part of this, Charlotte! You laundered the funds!”

“I didn't launder a single dollar, Richard,” I said, stepping back beside Eleanor. “Two hours ago, I executed a complete voluntary disclosure agreement under Title 18 of the United States Code. I surrendered the Delaware trust fund, surrendered Evelyn Sterling’s original diaries, and provided the unredacted fire marshal reports.”

I leaned in close to my father’s ear, making sure every syllable burned into his memory.

“I am an innocent whistleblower granting full federal cooperation. You, however, are a fugitive facing two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, federal racketeering, arson, and sixty-four counts of public infrastructure fraud.”

Richard’s eyes went completely dead. The terrifying realization of his absolute, irreversible destruction washed over him.

The heavy corrugated metal doors of the warehouse suddenly exploded inward with a deafening crash.

Flash-bang grenades detonated with blinding white light and concussive thunder: *BANG! BANG!*

“FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! DOWN ON THE GROUND! DOWN ON THE GROUND!”

Dozens of tactical officers in body armor, helmets, and assault rifles flooded the warehouse floor, red laser dots painting the walls, the pillars, and settling squarely on Richard Bennett’s chest.

David Cole immediately raised his hands, displaying his retired law enforcement credentials. Tyler dropped to his knees, sobbing hysterically, his hands clasped behind his head.

Eleanor Vance stood completely still beside me, leaning on her cane, watching with serene, peaceful satisfaction as federal agents swarmed Marcus Sterling and tackled the chair holding Richard Bennett, slicing the cables and pinning him face-down against the filthy concrete.

“Richard Bennett, you are under arrest for the murder of Evelyn Sterling!” a federal agent barked, wrenching my father’s arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

My father thrashed against the floor, spitting blood and dirt, his crazed eyes finding mine through the sea of tactical boots.

“CHARLOTTE!” he howled, his voice breaking into a wretched, desperate screech. “TELL THEM! TELL THEM I’M YOUR FATHER! YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME! I GAVE YOU LIFE!”

I looked down at him from my towering height, my charcoal overcoat buttoned tight, my face completely impassive.

“You didn't give me life, Richard,” I said, my voice carrying clearly above the shouting agents. “You gave me a storm. Eleanor gave me life.”

May you like

Two agents hauled him to his feet like a sack of garbage and dragged him toward the fleet of armored vehicles waiting outside in the rain.
